Because 395 of those rooms are suites, the upsell that costs a fortune elsewhere is often a small step here.

Originally built in 1918 as lodging for Kohler factory workers and reborn as a resort in 1981, it runs nine restaurants, four championship golf courses and the Forbes Five-Star Kohler Waters Spa. The welcome is warm and unfussy in a way that suits the place, and the bathrooms, unsurprisingly for the Kohler company, are a genuine event.

The insider tip: request a room in the original 1918 Tudor main building rather than the newer Carriage House across the road if you want the historic character; and book a Kohler Waters Spa slot before arrival, it sells out. What to book: a round at Whistling Straits if you play.

Honest note: this is a golf-and-spa destination in rural Wisconsin, so it lives or dies on those interests and on the season, winters are long and cold, and there is little beyond the resort itself. If you do not golf or spa, the case thins.

The insider tip: ask for a high room on the river (north) side for the Chicago River and lake light, and book the Pavilion for afternoon tea, a Langham signature done properly here. What to book: a Chuan Spa treatment, the spa carries its own Forbes Five-Star rating.

Honest note: it is a business-and-leisure city hotel, so rates climb hard during major conventions and peak summer weekends, the value is in booking around those. And as a downtown tower it offers polish and a river view rather than grounds or a resort scene.

Honest note: despite the "Del Mar" name it sits about five miles inland in a canyon, not on the beach, so this is a golf-and-spa resort, not a seafront one. And in fairness, Forbes moved the hotel itself to Four-Star in 2025 even as AAA holds it at Five Diamond and the spa keeps Forbes Five-Star, a split worth knowing before you book.
