Oetker Collection is where you go for the resort fantasy at the very top of the market. Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, with its cliff-edge saltwater pool above the Mediterranean, is one of the most storied resorts on earth; Eden Rock in St Barths and Jumby Bay Island in Antigua extend the beach reach, and Chateau Saint-Martin above Vence and L'Apogee in Courchevel cover the hills and the snow. The collection still has genuine city hotels, Le Bristol in Paris, The Lanesborough in London, The Woodward in Geneva, but its soul is on the coast.

It is family-led rather than corporate, carrying a hospitality legacy the Oetker family traces to 1872, and it keeps the list short: eleven Masterpiece Hotels in all. The most recent addition, Hotel La Palma in Capri, opened in 2023 as the group's first hotel in Italy, a 50-key restoration on the island's most famous piazza.

Honest trade-off: the footprint is small and very Europe-and-resort-weighted, so outside Paris, London and Geneva the city coverage is thin, and there is no points program. Because the portfolio mixes family-owned and managed properties, the feel varies more than a single-owner group's; and like Dorchester, rates sit at the apex of every market.

Dorchester Collection is the urban answer to Oetker. Its hotels are the buildings that define their cities: The Dorchester, which opened on Park Lane in 1931, and its neighbor 45 Park Lane in London; Le Meurice and Hotel Plaza Athenee in Paris; Hotel Principe di Savoia in Milan and Hotel Eden in Rome. In Los Angeles it holds two of the most famous hotels in America, The Beverly Hills Hotel and Hotel Bel-Air, and it adds Coworth Park for an English country break.

The collection brand was established in 2006 and is owned by the Brunei Investment Agency. In February 2024 it opened The Lana in Dubai, its tenth hotel and first in the Middle East, a Foster + Partners tower on the Marasi Bay marina with a Dior Spa. The consistency is the selling point: a small portfolio under one owner, kept to a uniform standard.

Honest trade-off: ownership is the elephant in the room. Because the collection is owned by the government of Brunei, its hotels have faced boycotts since 2014, reignited in 2019, over Brunei's penal code, a factor some travelers, companies and event planners weigh before booking. Beyond that, the brand is small and overwhelmingly urban, with little to offer on the beach, and there is no loyalty program.
