Waldorf Astoria vs St Regis: Which Brand Wins?

Two brands, one ancestor: both descend from Astor family hotels in Manhattan. St Regis is the larger and more codified, more than 65 hotels and a century-old butler ritual, though not at every address. Waldorf Astoria is fresher off its $2 billion New York rebirth, with 39 flags of very mixed pedigree behind it. We ruled city by city.

No two luxury brands share blood like these two. William Waldorf Astor opened the Waldorf Hotel on Fifth Avenue in 1893; his cousin John Jacob Astor IV built the adjoining Astoria in 1897, and the combined Waldorf-Astoria became the most famous hotel on earth. The same John Jacob Astor IV then opened The St. Regis New York in 1904. A family quarrel, in other words, is still running 130 years later under two corporate parents: Waldorf Astoria as Hilton's flagship, St Regis inside Marriott.

The modern portfolios have grown apart. St Regis counts more than 65 hotels as of June 2026, added the Klotild Palace in Budapest in April, and has signed as far ahead as Queenstown for late 2027. Waldorf Astoria runs 39 properties in 18 countries and is spending its energy on marquee entries, Sydney, Tokyo, Bali, Hanoi, New Delhi and Jaipur among the announced wave, plus the one project that changes this comparison: the reopening of the New York original.

That reopening is the fact this page turns on. After eight years dark and a reported $2 billion, the 1931 Park Avenue landmark took guests again on September 1, 2025, with 1,413 cramped rooms re-engineered into 375 generous ones. St Regis has nothing in motion at that scale; it also does not need anything at that scale, because its product is a ritual, not a building. Which promise holds up better is the audit below.

St Regis, best for ritual that survives the flag

The butler is the brand, where the butler exists
Born
1904, New York
Properties
65+, expanding
Signature
Butler service, afternoon rituals, Bloody Mary lore
Feel
Formal, scripted, dependable

Signature: The butler corps, packing, pressing and tea at the hour you name, a ritual in continuous service since John Jacob Astor IV installed it on Fifth Avenue more than a century ago.

Open with the asterisk, because the brand prints it small: Marriott's own materials put butler service at more than 40 hotels and resorts, against a portfolio of more than 65. Run the subtraction and roughly a third of St Regis addresses do not carry the signature the rate card implies. The flag has also been stretched fast under Marriott, growing toward 70 with conversions and resort builds, and the points press now asks openly whether the brand is, in its words, getting Bonvoyed. A guest paying St Regis rates is entitled to ask the same question.

Where the ritual is actually staffed, the delivery audits beautifully. The New York mothership at Fifth and 55th still runs the original corps. Budapest's Klotild Palace conversion opened in April 2026 with full butler service, evidence the script travels. And the script is the point: a St Regis day has a shape, tea, sabrage, the pressed shirt appearing without being chased, that a guest can rely on from Venice to Kuala Lumpur. No other Marriott brand, and few brands anywhere, codify service this tightly.

Honest trade-off: The formality reads as theatre to some guests, and the scripted charm can wobble at the newer outposts where the corps is young. Verify two things before booking any St Regis: that the butler program operates there, and when the rooms last saw a renovation. The flag guarantees the ritual's design, not every building's condition.

Waldorf Astoria, best at its formidable peaks

One reborn legend carrying thirty-nine flags
Born
1893 and 1897, New York
Properties
39 in 18 countries
Signature
The Park Avenue rebirth; trophy resorts
Feel
Grand, glossy, uneven at the edges

Signature: The building everyone means when they say the name: the 1931 Art Deco landmark at 301 Park Avenue, returned to service in 2025 after the most expensive hotel restoration New York has seen.

The con is the roster beneath the crown. Thirty-nine properties carry the name, and they range from that $2 billion icon to converted resorts and city towers whose connection to Waldorf heritage is the signage. Hilton positions the brand as its flagship tier, but the spread between the New York original and the portfolio's routine entries is wide, and the brand offers no equivalent of the St Regis butler, no single ritual a guest can hold every property to. What it sells instead is occasion, and occasion depends on the address.

At the right address, the case is overwhelming. The reopened New York flagship cut 1,413 rooms to 375 across 11 categories, SOM handling the architecture and Pierre-Yves Rochon the interiors, and early coverage treats it as the city's defining grand reopening. Rome Cavalieri holds its hilltop above the city with pools and galleries no centro storico rival can answer. Ithaafushi in the Maldives is among the largest-villa plays in the atolls. And the announced pipeline, Sydney, Tokyo, Bali, Hanoi, New Delhi, Jaipur, reads like a brand spending to meet its own legend.

Honest trade-off: Book the peaks and you get peaks; book the middle of the roster and you get a very good Hilton in eveningwear. The brand rewards exactly the homework its name suggests you skip: check what the specific property was before the flag went up, and what it charges now that the flag is there.

Where do they meet head to head?

Three arenas hold both flags at strength, and the rulings split. The Waldorf takes New York on the strength of its rebirth; Rome is closer than either brand admits; the Maldives comes down to what kind of island week you are buying.

The Verdict

Rule for St Regis when you are buying the system. The butler ritual is the most enforceable promise in branded luxury where it operates, and the brand's discipline travels. Just read the asterisk: a third of the portfolio does not staff the signature, so confirm before you book, not after.

Rule for Waldorf Astoria when you are buying an address, and above all the address: the reborn Park Avenue original is currently the strongest single argument either brand owns. Treat the rest of its roster case by case. The Astor cousins built rivals, not equals, and 130 years later that is still the honest reading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Waldorf Astoria or St Regis better?

St Regis is the more codified product: more than 65 hotels under Marriott with a century-old butler tradition, though the butler operates at just over 40 of them. Waldorf Astoria, Hilton's flagship brand at 39 properties, now owns the single most impressive asset in the fight, the $2 billion reborn New York original. Pick St Regis for predictable ritual, Waldorf for its peaks.

Is the Waldorf Astoria New York open again?

Yes. After an eight-year, reported $2 billion restoration by SOM with interiors by Pierre-Yves Rochon, the hotel reopened in 2025 and welcomed its first overnight guests on September 1, 2025. The 1931 Art Deco landmark at 301 Park Avenue now holds 375 hotel rooms in 11 categories, down from 1,413 before the conversion, with private residences occupying the tower floors.

Do all St Regis hotels have butler service?

No, and this is the fine print under the brand's signature. Marriott states the St Regis Butler Service operates at more than 40 hotels and resorts, against a portfolio of more than 65, so roughly a third of St Regis addresses do not carry the very ritual the flag is sold on. The tradition began at The St. Regis New York under John Jacob Astor IV. If the butler is your reason for booking, confirm the specific hotel offers it.

Which brand has more hotels?

St Regis, with more than 65 properties worldwide as of June 2026 and new openings still coming, including The St. Regis Budapest in the Klotild Palace in April 2026 and a signed debut in Queenstown, New Zealand for late 2027. Waldorf Astoria counts 39 properties in 18 countries, with first entries announced for Sydney, Tokyo, Bali, Hanoi, New Delhi, Jaipur and others.

Which is better in New York?

Today, the Waldorf Astoria. The St. Regis New York at Fifth and 55th remains a superb Beaux-Arts grande dame with the original butler corps. But the Waldorf's 2025 rebirth produced something New York had not seen in years: a fully re-engineered landmark where 1,413 old rooms became 375 large ones. Until the renovation gap closes, the ruling goes to Park Avenue.

Are Waldorf Astoria and St Regis really related?

Yes, by family. William Waldorf Astor opened the Waldorf Hotel in 1893; his cousin John Jacob Astor IV answered with the adjoining Astoria in 1897, creating the original Waldorf-Astoria, and then built The St. Regis New York in 1904. The two brands are descendants of an Astor family rivalry, which is partly why they compete for the same guest today.
