Four Seasons Resort and Residences Whistler, Our #16 for families

Four Seasons Resort and Residences Whistler ranks #16 on our 2026 list of the best family hotels in the world. The case below explains why, the kids’ programme, the suite layout, the pool depths, and the alternatives we measured it against.

“AAA Five-Diamond, Travel + Leisure's number-one resort in Canada, and the only Whistler property where the service genuinely matches the setting.”

The hotel itself

Canada's number-one resort by Travel + Leisure. The only Whistler hotel where Five-Diamond service is consistently delivered.

"Canada's number-one resort by Travel + Leisure, the only Whistler hotel where Five-Diamond service is consistently delivered. Not slope-side, but the shuttle is short and the rest is faultless."

Arrival at Four Seasons Whistler sets the tone for everything that follows. The driveway sweeps in beneath a towering timber porte-cochère, doors open before the car has fully stopped, and a name-recognition handover from valet to lobby is so practiced it goes almost unnoticed. The lobby itself, vaulted, stone-fireplaced, scented faintly of cedar, feels less like a hotel check-in than the entrance hall of a private mountain estate. This is the AAA Five-Diamond and Forbes Five-Star service ritual at its most assured, and it is the principal reason this property has held the top of Whistler's hotel ranking for a decade.

Why it works for a family

Mountain-resort families need different things from beach-resort families. Ski-in/ski-out is non-negotiable for trips with kids who don't want to walk in ski boots. The kids' ski school has to be on the property, and the children's room programme needs to handle both ski mornings and après-ski hot-chocolate afternoons. The fireplaces in the suites matter more than the spa (though the spa is also welcome at the end of the day).

Four Seasons Resorts are the family-luxury workhorse of the industry. Founded in Toronto in 1961 by Isadore Sharp and now controlled by Bill Gates and Saudi Arabia's PIF, the brand has refined the resort kids programme into something close to a science. The Kids For All Seasons programme is consistent across the portfolio, same standard at Maui, Maldives, Orlando, Jackson Hole. The connecting suite categories have actual configurations, not afterthoughts. The dining programmes have parent restaurants and kids restaurants in the same compound. For a family that wants the trip to work without thinking, Four Seasons Resorts are the floor.

The ski concierge programme is the everyday miracle of the resort. Guests check skis and boots in the morning of arrival; the next day, equipment appears warmed, dried, and waiting at the dedicated ski lounge before breakfast. Boot warmers, complimentary daily storage, and direct loading of skis onto the resort shuttle to Blackcomb Excalibur Gondola mean that the friction of a Whistler ski day, the cold-feet shuffle, the parking, the bag-juggle, is entirely engineered out. For families and for guests who do not ski every day, the same team books snowshoe outings, snowmobile excursions, and the helicopter to a glacier picnic on the Pemberton Icefield.

Sidecut, the in-house steakhouse, is the dining room that justifies a stay even on a non-ski night. The kitchen specialises in dry-aged Alberta beef, finished on a Josper grill and carved tableside, with a wine list that leans heavily on Okanagan and Napa cabernets. BRAIDWOOD Tavern, the more recent addition, occupies the lobby level and serves a smarter casual menu, wood-fired flatbreads, oysters, the best burger in Whistler, alongside a handsome cocktail bar. Both rooms are run by Four Seasons staff who quietly remember orders from previous visits.

Where it ranks against rivals

For a 2026 family trip at this level, the most direct comparisons are One&Only The Palm in Dubai, Le Sirenuse on the Amalfi Coast, and Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong. Where Whistler wins for a family is the ski-in setting and the all-season kids’ programme; the others win on beach, on city, or on a different season. Every one of them earns its place, and for certain itineraries the comparison hotel is the better call.

Practical: getting in

Why this hotel works for family

Editorial · #16 on the Top 20 Family Hotels 2026 list

Four Seasons Resort Whistler is a winter-and-summer family flagship in Canada, and the case rests on the Upper Village position. The property sits three blocks from the Blackcomb base, so the daytime programming runs ski-in-ski-out in winter and trail-out in summer without the family needing a car. The honest caveat: it is not slope-side, you take a short shuttle or walk to the lifts, so true door-to-piste skiers may prefer a base-village property.

Kids For All Seasons runs year-round. Winter programming coordinates with the Whistler Blackcomb ski school for lessons, and the outdoor heated pool and ice rink carry the afternoons; summer adds mountain-bike instruction at the Whistler Bike Park base and Lost Lake swimming.

For multigenerational stays, the connecting suites and the Three-Bedroom Town Homes are the floor plans that work; the Town Homes have full kitchens for a longer stay. The Sidecut steakhouse and the lobby-level Braidwood Tavern anchor the dining. The Vancouver airport drive is about two hours, with scheduled resort transfers. Best for the multigenerational ski-or-summer stay in Canada's flagship mountain resort.
