Skip the package with the rose petals and the set menu. The romance that lasts is a great room and an unhurried table, not staged theatrics, so spend on a suite with a view and a tasting menu you choose, and leave the add-ons.

Skip high summer on the Amalfi Coast and in Venice for a milestone year. The light is better and the crowds thinner in May, June, September and October, when Le Sirenuse, Caruso and the Lake Como grandes dames are at their best. For a city anniversary, Paris in the shoulder season beats August.
