Charleston

The finest city in the American South, and the only one where the hotel scene has learned to compete with the architecture. The Peninsula, bounded by the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, contains more pre-Revolutionary buildings per block than any city in the United States.

The short answer: On this list The Charleston Place ranks #1 for the most complete full-service luxury (now independently owned, formerly Belmond), with Hotel Bennett the grand-hotel rival. For value, the boutique tier led by Zero George opens around $300 a night, with several historic inns under $400. Rates peak in spring (March to May) and festival weeks; January and midsummer run softest.

Charleston Hotel Guide

When to Visit

Charleston's optimal months are March through May, the azaleas and dogwoods bloom, the temperatures are mild, and the restaurant scene is operating at full capacity. The Spoleto Festival USA in late May and early June is the city's premier cultural event. September and October offer the best combination of lower rates and pleasant weather after the August heat breaks. The Christmas season is surprisingly beautiful in the Historic District.

Best Neighbourhoods to Stay

The Peninsula is the historic district, all Charleston hotels worth booking are on or near the Peninsula, bounded by East Bay Street to the east and Broad Street to the south. The French Quarter is the most photographed area, with Rainbow Row and the historic churches. Harleston Village, south of Broad, is the most residential and quietest neighbourhood. Mount Pleasant, across the Ravenel Bridge, has beach resort hotels.

Average Hotel Prices

Charleston luxury rates average $250, $400 on weeknights, rising during the Spoleto Festival (May, June), Cooper River Bridge Run (April), and the fall food festival season. The city hotel tax is 13.5%. Most Charleston boutiques charge no resort fee.

Booking Tips

Charleston is the finest American city for walking, the peninsula's grid is manageable, the architecture rewards close attention, and the carriage horse tours provide the historical narrative efficiently. The single best restaurant in South Carolina is Husk (locally sourced Southern cuisine); Chez Nous and FIG are equally serious. King Street is the retail axis; the French Quarter is the architecture axis.

Charleston, answered

Charleston hotels, your questions answered

What is the best luxury hotel in Charleston?
The Charleston Place ranks first for full-service luxury, with the Charleston Grill, a rooftop pool and a spa under one roof on the Peninsula. Hotel Bennett is the grand-hotel rival near Marion Square and King Street, while Zero George and Wentworth Mansion lead the intimate historic-house category. Choose full-service for amenities, a historic inn for character.
Is Charleston Place still a Belmond hotel?
No. The hotel was acquired by Charleston-based Beemok Hospitality and is now independently owned and operated; Belmond helped manage the handover but the Belmond brand has been dropped. The property kept the name The Charleston Place and remains open through a multi-year, roughly $100 million renovation. Confirm any closed areas with the hotel before booking.
Where should I stay in Charleston?
For first-time visitors, the historic district and French Quarter put you walking distance from Rainbow Row, the City Market and King Street dining. Ansonborough and Harleston Village are quieter but still central. For a beach stay, Wild Dunes Resort sits on Isle of Palms, about a 30 to 40 minute drive from downtown. Stay downtown for the walkable Charleston most visitors come for.
How much do luxury hotels in Charleston cost?
Boutique and historic-inn rooms open around $300 a night (Zero George), and full-service luxury such as The Charleston Place starts near $400, rising sharply in peak season. Spring weekends and festival dates are the most expensive of the year. The softest rates fall in January and in the humid midsummer stretch.
When is the best time to visit Charleston?
Spring (March to May) is the peak, with mild weather, blooming gardens and the highest rates and crowds, so book months ahead. Fall (September to November) is the locals' favourite, warm and calmer. Summer is hot and humid but cheaper, and winter is mild with the year's lowest rates. Avoid late May to early June if you want to dodge the Spoleto festival surge.
Which Charleston hotel is best for a honeymoon or anniversary?
Zero George is the honeymoon pick, five 1804 buildings around a private garden with just 18 rooms. For an anniversary, The Charleston Place delivers the full-service occasion with the Charleston Grill and the spa, while Wentworth Mansion offers a Gilded Age mansion with only 21 rooms and complimentary evening wine. Match the property to the celebration you want.
