The finest city in the American South, and the only one where the hotel scene has learned to compete with the architecture. The Peninsula, bounded by the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, contains more pre-Revolutionary buildings per block than any city in the United States.

Charleston is the American South's most romantic city, and the hotel scene reflects it. Zero George Street Hotel — a collection of five antebellum buildings connected by a garden — is the honeymoon property of record, with a cooking school in the carriage house and a garden that is the most private outdoor space on the Peninsula. The Wentworth Mansion, a Gilded Age High Victorian estate, is the alternative for couples who want the grandest single building in Charleston as their honeymoon address.
Occasion Edit
The Belmond Charleston Place is the anniversary hotel for guests who want the most complete luxury infrastructure on the Peninsula — the retail arcade, the rooftop pool, the Charleston Grill, and the spa constitute a full-service anniversary that the boutique properties cannot match at scale. The Dewberry Charleston is the contemporary alternative: the 1964 federal building, restored with the most considered design programme in the city, with an anniversary dinner at Henrietta's that matches any Charleston restaurant.

City Guide
Charleston's optimal months are March through May — the azaleas and dogwoods bloom, the temperatures are mild, and the restaurant scene is operating at full capacity. The Spoleto Festival USA in late May and early June is the city's premier cultural event. September and October offer the best combination of lower rates and pleasant weather after the August heat breaks. The Christmas season is surprisingly beautiful in the Historic District.
The Peninsula is the historic district — all Charleston hotels worth booking are on or near the Peninsula, bounded by East Bay Street to the east and Broad Street to the south. The French Quarter is the most photographed area, with Rainbow Row and the historic churches. Harleston Village, south of Broad, is the most residential and quietest neighbourhood. Mount Pleasant, across the Ravenel Bridge, has beach resort hotels.
Charleston luxury rates average $250–$400 on weeknights, rising during the Spoleto Festival (May–June), Cooper River Bridge Run (April), and the fall food festival season. The city hotel tax is 13.5%. Most Charleston boutiques charge no resort fee.
Charleston is the finest American city for walking — the peninsula's grid is manageable, the architecture rewards close attention, and the carriage horse tours provide the historical narrative efficiently. The single best restaurant in South Carolina is Husk (locally sourced Southern cuisine); Chez Nous and FIG are equally serious. King Street is the retail axis; the French Quarter is the architecture axis.
