The Hotel

La Mirande sits at 4 Place de l'Amirande, directly opposite the Palais des Papes (the gothic papal palace built between 1335 and 1370 that holds Avignon's UNESCO World Heritage status and is, by floor area, the largest gothic palace in Europe). The original Mirande building was constructed in the late 14th century as the residence of the cardinal-nephew of Pope Clement VI; was substantially remodelled in the 17th century into a private hôtel particulier; and remained in private hands until 1989 when the Stein family acquired the property and began the comprehensive thirteen-year restoration that opened the 27-room hotel in 2002. La Mirande joined Relais & Châteaux at opening and has remained the only Relais & Châteaux property inside Avignon's medieval walls.

The architectural restoration was the centrepiece of the 1989-2002 project. The Stein family worked with the Avignon Direction des Sites et Monuments to preserve every distinctive 14th- and 17th-century feature: the original gothic vaulting in the entrance hall, the 17th-century painted-trompe-l'œil ceiling in the salon (the most-photographed interior in any Provence luxury hotel), the original cobbled courtyard with its 18th-century cast-iron lantern, the carved-Wood-Florentine staircase, and the original kitchen-and-cellar block in the basement (now operating as the Mirande Cuisine cooking school). The 27 rooms run across three floors of the original palace structure with no two rooms decorated alike — every category is individually furnished with antiques and period textiles that the Stein family has continuously curated.

The dining proposition is split across three operations. La Mirande Restaurant is the main fine-dining venue under chef Florent Pietravalle (one Michelin star since 2018), running a Provençal tasting register that builds against the Avignon-centred Provence vineyard map. La Table d'Hôtes — the most distinctive operation at the property — runs a single-seating chef's-counter dinner inside the restored 14th-century kitchen, with the chef cooking on the original wood-fired open hearth and the eight to ten guests seated around the original kitchen table. The Cuisine de la Mirande cooking-school programme runs three-times-weekly half-day workshops with the chef in the same kitchen — the only working medieval kitchen open to guests at any French luxury hotel.

What makes La Mirande the considered single-night anniversary or two-to-three-night Avignon stay is the location and the small-footprint Stein-family operation. Walking distance to the Palais des Papes (1 minute), the Pont d'Avignon (5 minutes), the Place de l'Horloge town hall (4 minutes), the Calvet museum (8 minutes), and the medieval ramparts (3 minutes). The property is structurally part of the Avignon papal-palace civic experience rather than adjacent to it. For an anniversary trip that pairs Avignon with a Provence-vineyard week (Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas are 30 minutes' drive), a writer's solo retreat that wants the medieval-Avignon register, or a single-night stop on a Paris-to-Mediterranean rail journey that wants the most-considered Avignon hotel, La Mirande is the only choice that combines all three.

Best Occasion Fit

Anniversary

La Mirande is one of the most-photogenic anniversary single-property stays in Provence — the medieval Palais-des-Papes-facing positioning, the 14th-century painted-trompe-l'œil salon, and the Table d'Hôtes single-seating dinner inside the restored medieval kitchen are the structural distinctions. Two to three nights is the standard anniversary stay, paired with a Châteauneuf-du-Pape day-trip and the cooking-school workshop with chef Pietravalle on the second morning.

Solo Retreat

For a writer or solo traveller who wants Avignon as the trip's register — and who values being inside the medieval walls rather than at a property in the surrounding Provence countryside — La Mirande is the only luxury option. The walking proposition (Palais des Papes, Pont d'Avignon, the Calvet, the medieval ramparts) gives the trip a structure the small property's 27-room footprint complements. Solo-stay rate categories run substantially below the milestone-anniversary suite tiers.
