The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua: #4 for families

The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua ranks #4 on our 2026 Top 20 Family Hotels list. The case below explains why, the kids’ programme, the suite layout, the pool depths, and the alternatives we measured it against.

“The Kapalua hillside above the bay, with the most complete golf resort programme in West Maui and the Jean-Michel Cousteau ocean programme.”

The hotel itself

The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua occupies a position that is genuinely unique on Maui, the northwestern tip of the island, set into a protected headland above Kapalua Bay, separated from the Wailea corridor by 45 minutes of coastal driving. That distance is the hotel's primary asset. Kapalua is where Maui goes quiet: the trade winds come from a different direction here, the beaches are narrower and more exposed, and the resort operates with the specific self-sufficiency of a luxury property that knows its guests have chosen it for reasons that have nothing to do with convenience.

The 463 rooms are distributed across a landscape that rises above the coast, with tiered views across the Pailolo Channel toward Molokai. Mountain views and ocean views require different rooms; the ocean-facing options on the upper floors produce the most dramatic morning light on Maui, the sun rises behind Haleakala and the light crosses the island before reaching Kapalua at an angle that turns the water shades of green and blue that feel unreasonable. The rooms themselves are Ritz-Carlton standard: sizeable, correctly executed, marble bathrooms, and the brand's characteristic refusal to compromise on bed quality.

Two Arnold Palmer, designed championship courses, the Plantation Course (host of the PGA Tour's Sentry Tournament of Champions each January) and the Bay Course, give serious golfers a reason to base an entire trip here. Kapalua Bay, a protected marine preserve at the base of the resort, is the island's most reliable snorkelling site: calm water, coral formations that remain intact, and a sea turtle population that has been resident long enough to be individually recognisable to long-term staff.

Why it works for a family

A beach-resort family trip succeeds when the hotel takes the kids off the parents' hands without making the kids feel banished. The properties that earn family-list inclusion in beach destinations have the kids' club staffed by professionals (not interns), the pool depths zoned for toddlers and adults, and the in-villa or in-suite dining that handles a 6pm kids' dinner and a 9pm parents' dinner without negotiation. The Maldives, Caribbean, and Hawaiian flagships have spent decades refining this.

The Ritz-Carlton, Marriott-owned since 1998, is the corporate-luxury workhorse. For families it earns its slot through the resort flagships that operate well above the brand's average, Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch in Beaver Creek, Ritz-Carlton Kapalua in Maui, Ritz-Carlton Bali, Ritz-Carlton Maldives Fari Islands. The brand's Ritz Kids programme is consistent across the portfolio.

The Spa at The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua draws from traditional Hawaiian healing practices alongside the international treatment menu, with practitioners who carry genuine cultural knowledge rather than marketing copy. The fitness centre overlooks the Bay Course fairways. Banyan Tree Restaurant provides the fine dining option; the atmosphere is less formal than the Ritz-Carlton brand implies, this is a resort hotel for people who are genuinely on holiday, not performing it.

Kapalua's remove from the Wailea corridor means this is a wellness retreat in the literal sense: you are removed. The spa's grounding in Hawaiian healing traditions is more than decoration, the lomi lomi practitioners here are among the best on the island. Add the morning swim at Kapalua Bay, the golf in the trade winds, and the absence of the Wailea crowds, and the Ritz-Carlton produces the conditions for genuine recovery.

Where it ranks against rivals

For a 2026 family trip at this level, Kapalua sits at #4, just above The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort (#5) and just below One&Only Reethi Rah (#3). Within Maui its direct rival is Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea (#2), larger and on the sunnier south shore; Kapalua's case is the quieter, greener northwest tip and the Jean-Michel Cousteau kids’ programme. Read the lower ranks as different fits, not lesser hotels.

Why this hotel works for family

Editorial ยท #4 on the Top 20 Family Hotels 2026 list

Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua is the West Maui family flagship, and its case is the position on the quieter northwest tip of the island. Kapalua is about twenty minutes from Lahaina, which is rebuilding after the 2023 fire, and roughly forty minutes from the busier Wailea-Kihei strip, so it sits in the part of Maui that still feels green and uncrowded.

The Ritz Kids programme runs year-round with the Jean-Michel Cousteau Ambassadors of the Environment partnership, one of the more serious environmental-education curriculums at any Hawaii luxury resort, and the teen surf sessions run at Honolua Bay, the protected break just up the coast.

For multigenerational stays, the two-bedroom Residential Suites with connecting Club Level rooms put grandparents, parents and children across three bedrooms in one configuration. Dining anchors on Banyan Tree for the grown-up dinner, with its Josper-grilled steaks and ocean views, while the Burger Shack handles the children's beachside lunch. The Kapalua championship golf courses and the tennis facility fill the days. The honest catch is that the location cuts both ways: it is calm and beautiful but a long drive from the airport and the south-shore restaurants. Best for a multigenerational West Maui stay away from the Wailea-Kihei crowds.
