"73 rooms on Wangfujing. Mandarin Oriental's boutique-luxury Beijing flagship — direct walking access to the Forbidden City."

Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing Beijing opened in November 2017 on Wangfujing — Beijing's primary luxury shopping street and the central commercial heart of the city, 10 minutes by foot from Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City — as Mandarin Oriental's Beijing flagship and the brand's only mainland China property in central Beijing (Mandarin Oriental Sanya is the brand's other Chinese flagship). The 73 rooms across the boutique-scale main building make this the smallest and most boutique-luxury of the major central-Beijing luxury hotels.

Why it works for business

Major business cities — Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Chicago, Boston, Washington DC, San Francisco — reward hotels that are operationally serious about the deal trip. The standard is high but the differentiation is local: each of these cities has a specific business neighbourhood (Pudong in Shanghai, the Loop in Chicago, DIFC in Dubai, K Street in Washington), and the hotels that succeed are the ones that read the geography correctly.

Mandarin Oriental is the one Asian hotel group whose Western expansion didn't dilute the original culture. For business MO matters because the service intensity is the highest in luxury — the longest spa programmes, the real floor butlers, the food rooms that are typically the city's best. The MO answer to a Hong Kong or Bangkok deal trip is qualitatively different from the Four Seasons answer in the same city: more deliberate, slower, more Asian, and consequently the right answer when the meeting is with Asian counterparts.

The 73 accommodations split between the entry-level Deluxe Rooms (with city views), Premier Rooms with substantial in-room living spaces, Junior Suites, and the multi-bedroom Suites including the Forbidden City Suite (the property's flagship single accommodation, with substantial private terrace and direct visual sightlines to the Forbidden City). The interiors are warm contemporary Chinese-modern with substantial use of Chinese craft elements, custom-designed furniture, and the integrated luxury infrastructure.

The grounds — the heated indoor swimming pool with city views, the comprehensive Mandarin Oriental Spa (with the brand's signature wellness programmes), the fitness centre, and the multi-restaurant complex — give the property the boutique-scale luxury infrastructure. The Mandarin Oriental Spa runs traditional Chinese medicine treatments alongside contemporary luxury spa programmes.

Where it ranks against rivals

For a 2026 deal trip at this level, the most direct comparisons are Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach in Dubai (#40 on this list), Four Seasons Hotel Austin in Austin (#42 on this list), Mandarin Oriental, Geneva in Geneva (#39 on this list). Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing, Beijing earns the higher rank for one or two specific reasons covered in the verdict above — usually a combination of address, lobby gravity, and the dining room that holds when the meeting goes long. The other properties are not lesser hotels — in some cases the answer for your particular trip is the runner-up.
