Rosewood Miramar Beach ranks #43 on our 2026 list of the best family hotels in the world. The case below explains why — the kids’ programme, the suite layout, the pool depths, and the alternatives we measured it against.
“Caruso's Montecito masterpiece — the only Forbes five-star resort directly on the sand in Santa Barbara, and unembarrassed about it.”
A 161-cottage village on Miramar Beach. The only Forbes Five-Star resort directly on the sand in the Santa Barbara region.
"Caruso's Montecito masterpiece — the only Forbes Five-Star resort directly on the sand in Santa Barbara, and unembarrassed about it. If you have one weekend in California and want it to feel cinematic, this is the address."
Rosewood Miramar Beach opened in March 2019 after a fifteen-year, half-billion-dollar reinvention of the old Miramar Hotel by Rick Caruso — the Los Angeles developer behind The Grove and Palisades Village, who treated this Montecito project as a personal civic statement. The site itself is unrepeatable: sixteen oceanfront acres directly on Miramar Beach, with the Pacific on one side and the Santa Ynez Mountains on the other, fifteen minutes south of central Santa Barbara. Within months of opening it was clear Caruso had not built a hotel; he had built the address Montecito had been quietly waiting for since the original Miramar closed in 2000.
American coastal family resorts — Palm Beach, Sea Island, Kiawah, Hilton Head, Amelia Island — have been running multi-generational trips for the same East Coast families for generations. The clubs and golf programmes mean adults can get a morning to themselves while the kids do the camp programme.
Rosewood is the hotel group that figured out how to be very specifically itself. For families Rosewood matters because the resorts in the portfolio — Baha Mar Bahamas, Rosewood Phuket, Miramar Beach Santa Barbara, Koh Samui — are calibrated for the milestone family trip, with kids clubs that are genuinely good and architectural privacy that lets parents actually disappear during their booked spa hours.
The 161 rooms and suites are arranged as a cottage village rather than a single tower — a deliberate choice that gives the property the feel of a Hamptons estate transposed onto the California coast. Accommodations are split between the Miramar Beach Cottages, the Bungalows, the Manor House, and the Beach House, with interiors by Roman & Williams and Pembrooke & Ives in a coastal palette of cream, navy, and weathered teak. Many cottages have private outdoor living rooms with fireplaces; the beachfront suites open directly onto the sand. In its first full year of operation Rosewood Miramar earned Forbes Five-Star status — the only resort in the greater Santa Barbara region to hold the rating, and one of fewer than a dozen Five-Star beachfront properties in the United States.
Caruso's, the property's signature restaurant, is a coastal-Italian dining room with hand-painted ceiling murals and an oceanfront terrace where most reservations are made. The wine list is built around Santa Barbara County and Italian benchmarks; the pasta is made in-house each morning. Manor Bar — the snug ground-floor cocktail room in the Manor House — is the better choice for a nightcap, lit low and run by a team that takes the classics seriously. At the south end of the beach, Malibu Farm is the casual barefoot counterpoint: a beach club restaurant on the sand, ideal for a long lunch in a swimsuit and a linen shirt.
For a 2026 family trip at this level, the most direct comparisons are Four Seasons Hotel Prague in Prague (#42 on this list), Four Seasons Hotel Firenze in Florence (#44 on this list), Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta in Atlanta (#41 on this list). Rosewood Miramar Beach earns the higher rank for one or two specific reasons covered in the verdict above — usually a combination of kids’ programme depth, suite configuration, and the parent restaurant that holds when the meeting goes long. The other properties are not lesser hotels — in some cases the answer for your particular trip is the runner-up.
