Cheval Blanc St-Tropez ranks #3 on our 2026 list of the best luxury hotels in the world. The case below explains why — the architecture, the operating standard, the rare quality of personal service at scale, and the alternatives we measured it against.
“LVMH's St-Tropez flagship — 30 suites, three Michelin stars at La Vague d'Or, Dior Spa, and the most refined hotel in the village. Closes November–April.”
LVMH's St-Tropez flagship — 32 rooms by Jean-Michel Wilmotte, three Michelin stars at La Vague d'Or under Arnaud Donckele, and the only hotel in town with its own private beach on the sand.
"The only hotel in St-Tropez with sand of its own. Three Michelin stars on the menu and Arnaud Bernard Arnault on the deed. The town's defining address."
Cheval Blanc St-Tropez occupies a beachfront position at Plage de la Bouillabaisse — a 10-minute walk from the Vieux Port and Place des Lices, and the only hotel within Saint-Tropez town limits with its own private beach on the sand. The property was previously known as La Résidence de la Pinède under the Delion family, who owned and operated the hotel from 1985 until 2017. LVMH acquired the property in 2017, integrated it into the Cheval Blanc Maison collection (sister to Cheval Blanc Courchevel, Randheli, Paris, and St-Barth), and reopened in 2019 after a comprehensive interior reimagining by French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte.
The Mediterranean luxury hotel sits between resort and town — close enough to walk for an espresso, far enough to see the village from the bath. World-list properties from this geography combine the on-site Michelin kitchen, the boat the hotel owns, and the sunset table that has been booked by the same families for forty years.
Cheval Blanc is LVMH's quiet bet that the most decorated luxury house in the world can also build the most decorated hotels in the world. It mostly is. The properties are few and the standard is uniformly absurd: Bonpoint amenities for the children, Guerlain for the spa, food rooms run by chefs the hotel has stolen from three Michelin-starred kitchens. On a world list Cheval Blanc earns inclusion through architectural ambition and a refusal to compromise even on details a guest will never notice.
There are 32 rooms, suites, and a single Villa Riviera. Wilmotte's reinterpretation drew from coastal modernism: white plaster walls, light woods, polished concrete floors, soft Mediterranean palette, and contemporary art curated in collaboration with the Cheval Blanc art programme. Most rooms face the sea or the umbrella pines that name the original property; the Bay Suite and the Villa Riviera have full sea-view terraces with private plunge pools. The Villa Riviera — the property's largest accommodation — runs as a fully detached villa with three bedrooms, dedicated staff, and entry through its own driveway, used for milestone family bookings and the highest-end repeat guest profiles.
La Vague d'Or — chef Arnaud Donckele's signature restaurant — holds three Michelin stars and 5 toques with a 19/20 Gault Millau rating, one of the most decorated kitchens on the Côte d'Azur. The cuisine is contemporary Provençal with serious sourcing from local producers and the property's herb gardens. The dining room and terrace face the sea; reservations book months ahead. La Terrasse handles the more casual lunch and breakfast service. The private beach at Plage de la Bouillabaisse, the on-property pool, and the Cheval Blanc Spa with Guerlain partnerships round out the wellness and leisure offering. Service runs to the standard the brand maintains across its small Maison collection — the staff-to-guest ratio is one of the highest in St-Tropez.
The most direct comparisons in this top-50 are Aman New York in New York (#2), Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid in Madrid (#4), The Connaught in London (#1). Cheval Blanc St-Tropez earns the higher rank for one or two specific reasons we cover in the verdict above. The other hotels are not lesser properties — on a different lens (occasion, region, hotel type) the order would shuffle. See our occasion-specific Top 50s for the alternative views.
Address: Plage de la Bouillabaisse, 83990 Saint-Tropez, France. World-list-tier hotels book three to nine months ahead, longer for the suite categories that book peer-pressure tight in peak season.
