Maui Hotel Prices & When to Book

Maui resorts are cheapest in September, early December and late January — shoulder months run roughly 25–35% below peak. The Christmas–New Year week (Dec 23–Jan 5) is the spike, commanding hundreds of dollars a night above shoulder rates and requiring 9–12 months’ lead. Book peak far ahead; September you can move closer in.

Maui has two ceilings and one outright spike, and timing around them is the whole game. Peak runs mid-December through March, when whale season and mainland winter escapes fill the west-side resorts of Wailea and Ka’anapali, and again June through mid-August for summer family travel. Layered on top is the Christmas–New Year week, the single most expensive stretch of the year.

The value lives in the shoulders, and September is the deal of the year: warmest water, fewest people, and sub-$300 ocean-view rooms where peak weeks run far higher. Shoulder season — mid-April through May and September through mid-November — drops resort rates roughly 25–35%, per Hawaii Guide and Travellers Worldwide.

When to book a Maui hotel — and how far ahead

Book the Christmas–New Year week nine to twelve months ahead, peak winter and summer several months out, and shoulder-season September a few weeks ahead. Maui’s west-side luxury supply is finite and the holiday week sells out earliest at the highest rates — the one date where booking very early is non-negotiable. Outside peak, you have far more flexibility.

The smart-value window

The smartest value is the first two weeks of September after Labor Day: the water is at its warmest, the crowds are thinnest, and ocean-view rooms that command peak rates in winter dip below $300. Early-to-mid December (before the 20th) and the third and fourth weeks of January are close behind. Across April–May and September–November, expect roughly 25–35% off peak.

How to book well

Be specific about the view — an ocean-view or pool-side category is priced very differently from a garden-view room at the same resort, and the cheaper rate is often the lesser aspect. Watch resort fees and parking, which add up on a multi-night stay. Cross-shop our Top Maui family resorts and most romantic Maui hotels rankings before booking.

Where the value is — and what's overpriced

The value is September; the overpriced trap is the Christmas–New Year week and any peak-winter ocean-view room booked late. Paying the holiday rate buys you the most crowded, most expensive version of the island. Move the same trip to September and you keep the warm water and the sunsets, lose the crowds, and can save hundreds of dollars a night on an almost identical room.

Where we’d steer you: if the ocean view is the point — and on Maui it usually is — book it in shoulder season rather than taking a peak-season garden room at a similar price. We also ask travellers to be a considerate guest of a community still rebuilding after the 2023 Lahaina wildfire; support local businesses and follow current guidance. Events that spike hotel rates

Maui’s biggest rate spike is the calendar, not a festival: the Christmas–New Year week is in a class of its own. From roughly December 23 to January 5, rates run hundreds of dollars a night above shoulder season and the best resorts book out nine to twelve months ahead. Whale season (December–March) underpins the winter peak more broadly.

Summer school holidays drive the June-to-mid-August peak, and US holiday weekends — Presidents’ Day, spring break, Thanksgiving — firm up specific dates. There is no single event that moves Maui pricing the way the US holiday and school calendar does, which is why the shoulder weeks between them are such reliable value.

Frequently asked questions

When is the cheapest time to visit Maui?

September is the deal of the year — warmest water, fewest people, and ocean-view rooms that dip below $300 where peak weeks run far higher. Early-to-mid December before the 20th, and the third and fourth weeks of January, are close behind. The April–May and September–November shoulders run roughly 25–35% below peak.

What is the most expensive time to visit Maui?

The Christmas–New Year week, roughly December 23 to January 5, is the annual peak, with rates hundreds of dollars a night above shoulder season. The broader peaks are mid-December through March (whale season) and June through mid-August (summer travel), when west-side ocean-view rooms often exceed $400.

How far ahead should I book a Maui resort?

Nine to twelve months ahead for the Christmas–New Year week, several months for peak winter or summer, and just a few weeks for shoulder-season September. The holiday week is the one date where booking very early is essential; outside peak you have much more flexibility and can wait for better rates.

Is the ocean view worth paying extra for in Maui?

Usually yes — the Pacific view and sunset are the point on the west side, and a cheaper rate is often a garden-view room facing away from the water. We’d rather book a genuine ocean-view category in shoulder season than take a peak-season garden room at a similar price. Confirm the exact view at booking.

Do Maui resorts charge resort fees?

Most do, and with parking they add up over a multi-night stay. Always read the resort fee and parking into your total before comparing properties. A lower nightly rate with high fees can cost more than a higher rate with lower ones, so confirm the all-in price.

Is it respectful to visit Maui after the 2023 wildfire?

Yes — tourism supports the island’s economy, and most of Maui is open and welcoming. Travel thoughtfully: support local businesses, respect any areas still recovering around Lahaina, and follow current local guidance. Visiting the rest of the island responsibly helps the community rebuild.
