Passalacqua, Our #1 for honeymoons

Passalacqua ranks #1 on our 2026 list of the best honeymoon hotels in the world. The case below explains why, the hotel itself, the standard it operates at, what it does specifically for couples on a milestone trip, and the alternatives we tested it against.

“Twenty-four rooms in an 18th-century villa above Moltrasio, opened 2022 by the De Santis family who own Grand Hotel Tremezzo. The new benchmark on the lake.”

The hotel itself

Passalacqua opened in 2022 in Moltrasio, on Lake Como's western shore, the De Santis family's restoration of an 18th-century villa once frequented by the composer Vincenzo Bellini. The same family owns Grand Hotel Tremezzo a few kilometres up the shore, and that ownership-runs-operation model is the whole pitch.

It was named the world's best hotel at the inaugural World's 50 Best Hotels in 2023, and placed #2 the following year. Twenty-four suites, no more. We rank it #1 for honeymoons not because the awards say so but because it is the rare property where the building, the gardens, and the service are all pointed at the same thing: two people who do not want to leave.

Why it works for a honeymoon

A Lake Como honeymoon is a deliberate argument against the beach. The couple who picks Passalacqua is choosing terraced gardens over white sand, a boat instead of a buggy, and a property small enough that the staff learn your names by the second morning. The hotel succeeds or fails on its grounds, its dining, and the sense that the rest of the world has been politely shown out.

Lake Como is, more than any other lake in luxury travel, the lake where the hotel is the destination. Villa d'Este, Passalacqua, Grand Hotel Tremezzo, the new Mandarin Oriental, and the Sereno operate at a standard that the lake itself doesn't really support, there isn't a Michelin-density problem in Como, but every single luxury hotel here has a Michelin kitchen of its own. For honeymoons Como is the European answer to the Maldives: you are not really meant to leave the property.

The grounds run to seven acres of terraced gardens descending to the shore, with water features along a central axis, a lakeside swimming pool, and a private dock for boat excursions. The pool and the gardens are the honeymoon-photograph settings the property is known for, and they are the reason most couples never feel the need to book a car.

Dining centres on the restaurant, where chef Viviana Varese cooks from an open kitchen guests can wander into, a deliberately informal, home-like format rather than a hushed gastronomic temple. The signature suites are themed after operas tied to Bellini, and the Bellini suite comes with its own grand piano played for arriving guests. What you are paying for is scale: 24 suites and a staff count that produces one of the highest staff-to-guest ratios in Italian luxury hospitality. The honest trade-off is that all of this is seasonal and singular: Passalacqua runs roughly March through November, there is one restaurant rather than a roster, and if you want nightlife, shopping, or a buzzy resort scene, this is the wrong address. Book it for the opposite of all that.

Where it ranks against rivals

For a 2026 honeymoon at this level, the closest rivals on our list are Cheval Blanc Randheli in the Maldives (#2), One&Only Reethi Rah (#3), and Belmond Hotel Cipriani in Venice (#4). If your honeymoon is built around an overwater villa and a beach, the two Maldives properties beat Passalacqua outright; we rank Passalacqua first because, for couples who want Europe and an indoor-outdoor villa over a swimsuit-all-day resort, nothing currently matches it.

Why this hotel works for a honeymoon

Editorial · #1 on the Top 20 Honeymoon Hotels 2026 list

Passalacqua earns the #1 honeymoon position because the 2022 De Santis family opening produced the freshest top-tier honeymoon hotel in any region, anywhere. The Wagner Suite at 175 sq m with private lake-facing terrace is the largest single honeymoon suite among Italian lakes properties. The 24-suite scale produces a staff-to-guest ratio approaching 4:1, the deepest in Italy at the top tier.

For honeymoon couples specifically, Passalacqua is the address where the trip's principal cultural deposit is the property itself. The Moltrasio position on Lake Como places the property close to the De Santis family's Grand Hotel Tremezzo (cross-access included with stays) and within boat-access range of Bellagio, Cernobbio, and the historic Villa d'Este. The Salone Mosaico restaurant under Viviana Varese operates from the original 1787 mosaic-floored ballroom. The seasonal operation runs March through November.
