"You sleep inside a state park, walk through the woods at sunrise to a 1817 gristmill, and pay roughly a quarter of what a four-star room costs in Bloomington. Spring Mill Inn is the most quietly excellent state park inn in Indiana, and it is genuinely under-priced for what it delivers."

The Hotel

Spring Mill Inn is the principal accommodation inside Spring Mill State Park, the 1,358-acre park near Mitchell, Indiana, set on a forested limestone plateau roughly forty minutes east of French Lick. The original inn building dates to the Civilian Conservation Corps era of the 1930s, the structure that gives most Indiana state park inns their distinctive Indiana-limestone-and-pitched-roof vocabulary. The property was closed for a full multi-year renovation completed in 2024 and reopened as a contemporary 71-room inn that retains the original stone shell while updating every room, the lobby, and the Millstone Dining Room.

The rooms are uncomplicated and well-executed. Two-queen layouts predominate (the format the inn is busiest in), with one-king options for couples and accessible categories on the ground floor. Each room is roughly 280 to 320 square feet, the renovation introduced new carpet, lighting, and bathrooms, and the most popular categories include Amish-made rocking chairs and Indiana-pieced country quilts as a deliberate gesture toward the regional craft tradition. Views split between the woods on the back of the building and the historic circle drive at the front. The price band runs $99 to $249 across categories and seasons, which is well below the four-star room product an hour north in Bloomington and roughly half the room product an hour west in French Lick.

The Millstone Dining Room is the property's social heart. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a midwestern American menu that leans on Hoosier cuisine: pan-fried catfish, persimmon pudding, sugar cream pie, and a fried chicken plate that is one of the better in the state. The room has a wall of windows onto the woods and is the only sit-down dining option inside the park boundary, which means it books out for Sunday brunch in summer and holiday weekends; reservations are strongly recommended for any guest who wants a window table. The indoor pool was replaced during the renovation with a surface-level indoor-outdoor splash pad and a recreational pool, a deliberate pivot toward families with young children that has worked operationally.

The single signature feature of a Spring Mill Inn stay is the access it provides to Spirit of Vincennes Pioneer Village, the restored 1817 settlement at the bottom of the limestone ravine inside the park. Guests can walk from the inn through wooded paths to the gristmill, the apothecary, the woollen mill, and the dozen restored cabins; the village runs costumed interpreters in summer and on weekends, and the gristmill produces stone-ground cornmeal that is sold at the inn gift shop. The park also holds the Twin Caves boat tour, the Donaldson Cave, a CCC-era nature center, and the Grissom Memorial honouring the Mitchell-born astronaut. For the price and the access, the Spring Mill Inn is the best-value heritage stay in the state.

Best Occasion Fit

Family Holiday

For a midwestern family weekend that wants pool, woods, a gristmill, and a price tag a parent can absorb without flinching, Spring Mill Inn is the correct booking in this corner of Indiana. The two-queen rooms hold two kids easily, the new indoor splash pad is sized for ages 3 to 10, the pioneer village delivers a half-day of unprompted curiosity, and the Twin Caves boat tour is the photo the trip is remembered for. Pack hiking shoes for the ravine trails.

Solo Retreat

For a writer's weekend or a multi-night reading retreat at the most quiet price point in the state, the Spring Mill Inn is a defensible answer. The one-king woods-view rooms are calm, the dining room is open three meals a day, the wifi works, and the ravine trails offer four to six hours of walking from the door without needing a car. Bring a book, a notebook, and rain shoes; the limestone underfoot is greasy after rain.

Anniversary

An anniversary at Spring Mill Inn is the quiet option, not the surprise option. Book a one-king woods-view, take the dinner reservation at the Millstone for the early evening sunset window, walk the gristmill at golden hour, and treat the trip as a small-format milestone rather than a destination weekend. For larger milestones, this is the wrong booking; for a calm second-decade anniversary that wants the woods more than the spa, it is exactly right.
