Eighty rooms in a low Spanish hacienda layout on the southern end of Cabrillo Highway, alongside the Half Moon Bay Golf Links, with wood-burning fireplaces, a heated outdoor pool and hot tub, and the most relaxed price point in the city for a four-star-equivalent property.
"The Lodge is the answer for the Half Moon Bay guest who has done the math. Eighty rooms, fireplaces and a fire-warmed pool, the same Coastal Trail as the Ritz-Carlton for a third of the rate, and a parking lot that empties out by ten in the morning."
The Half Moon Bay Lodge sits at 2400 South Cabrillo Highway on the southern edge of Half Moon Bay, immediately adjacent to the Half Moon Bay Golf Links and roughly a mile north of the Ritz-Carlton property. The building is a Spanish-hacienda-style two-story structure arranged around a series of garden courtyards, with a heated outdoor pool, a hot tub, and a fire-pit terrace at the center. The property opened in 1985 and has run continuously since then under independent ownership; the operational style is the older Californian lodge format that has largely disappeared from the coast.
The 80 rooms and suites are distributed across the four buildings around the central courtyards. Standard rooms run roughly 32 to 36 square metres with a king or two queens, a working wood-burning fireplace, a private patio or balcony onto the garden or the golf course, the lodge bedding programme, and a 49-inch flat screen. Roughly 60 percent of rooms have a golf-course view to the west and a clean sightline toward the Pacific in the distance; the remaining 40 percent overlook the central pool courtyard. Suites add a separate sitting area and a larger balcony. The 2023 renovation refreshed bedding, carpets, and the bathroom fixtures while preserving the wood-beamed ceiling and the hacienda tile work.
Food is intentionally modest. The complimentary continental breakfast is served in the lobby breakfast room from seven to ten, with a hot egg dish, pastries, fruit, and coffee or tea. There is no full-service restaurant on site; the property keeps a maintained list of dinner reservations within walking distance and at the Ritz-Carlton up the road. The afternoon wine and cheese reception runs four to six in the lobby fireplace lounge, a small but pleasant touch. The room service offer is limited and runs through a contracted local kitchen.
The amenity set is built around the outdoor pool, hot tub, and fire pit, all of which run year-round (the pool is heated to 82 degrees) and all of which sit in the central courtyard sheltered from the Pacific wind. The fitness center is small but functional. The lodge sits directly on the Coastal Trail, which connects north to Pillar Point Harbor and south to the Ritz-Carlton cliff walk; the same trail that the resort guests pay seven hundred dollars more per night to access starts at the lodge's back gate. The property handles a small wedding programme on the central lawn and runs as a popular family-vacation booking in summer. Service is warm and competent, the front office is unusually fast for an 80-room independent, and the staff-to-room ratio supports a relaxed rather than formal style. The Half Moon Bay Lodge is the right answer when the brief is the coast at a reasonable rate.
For a family booking on the Half Moon Bay coast the Lodge is the practical answer. The two-queen room category sleeps a family of four comfortably; the heated pool and hot tub run year-round in a sheltered courtyard; the fire-pit terrace runs nightly; the breakfast is included; and the Coastal Trail is accessible directly from the back gate. The Half Moon Bay Brewing Company is a two-minute walk and handles a kids' menu without complaint. The price point materially under the Ritz-Carlton and Beach House leaves room for a Saturday dinner at a sit-down restaurant.
For a Half Moon Bay-area business booking the Lodge handles the small-group offsite or the individual remote-working stay without resort overhead. The lobby fireplace lounge functions as a working space outside breakfast hours, the complimentary parking removes the cost question, and the location handles the drive to Silicon Valley clients (35 minutes to Palo Alto, 45 to Mountain View). The lodge runs a small meeting room for groups of up to 20 with full AV.
