Magens Point Resort

A hillside cluster of studios and one and two-bedroom villas perched on the ridge above Magens Bay, with the most photographed beach in the U.S. Virgin Islands a ten-minute downhill drive from the front gate and a freshwater pool framing the bay from the property's terrace.

"It is not the Ritz across the headland, and it does not pretend to be. What Magens Point sells is a kitchen, a balcony, and Magens Bay below the window for roughly a third of the price of the resort on the other side of the road."

The Hotel

Magens Point Resort sits at the top of Magens Bay Road on the north side of St. Thomas, three and a half miles from Charlotte Amalie and seven miles from Cyril E. King Airport. The property opened in the 1970s as a residential development, became Magens Point Hotel in 1976, then Magens Point Resort in the early 1980s, and was rebranded Flamboyan on the Bay Resort and Villas in 2015. Most longtime visitors still book it by the original name, which is why it remains in the editorial canon as Magens Point Resort. The property is currently in soft-reopen mode following post-hurricane works, with the restaurant and lower pool operating and a 20-unit studio block under continued renovation.

The accommodation is divided into three categories: studio suites of roughly 30 square metres with a kitchenette and a small balcony, one-bedroom villas at around 65 square metres with a full kitchen and a separate living room, and two-bedroom villas at 95 square metres designed for families. Every unit has air conditioning, a refrigerator and microwave, a TV, a private telephone, and either a bay-side or garden orientation. The bay-facing units are the booking the trip turns on: a wide-angle line of sight across Magens Bay and out to the British Virgin Islands beyond, particularly photogenic at sunset from the upper-tier balconies.

Resort amenities are mid-market and consistent with the price band. There is a freshwater swimming pool on the lower terrace, an on-site restaurant and snack bar, a small fitness room, a game room, a tennis court, a grocery store for in-villa cooking, and a self-service laundry block. The most useful amenity is the resort shuttle to Magens Bay Beach, which collapses the ten-minute downhill drive to a coordinated service that runs through the day; Magens Bay itself is repeatedly listed by National Geographic and Conde Nast among the ten best beaches in the world, and you are effectively staying at the trailhead.

The operating model is partly timeshare and partly nightly rental, which means the on-site experience varies week to week as different owner-cohorts cycle through. Service is friendly and small-team rather than five-star concierge; the front desk handles dive trips, boat charters to the BVI, taxi bookings to Charlotte Amalie cruise dock, and grocery runs. The Ritz-Carlton, the Westin Beach Resort Frenchman's Reef, and the Pavilions and Pools are the property's more luxurious north-shore alternatives; the case for Magens Point is the kitchen, the bay view, and the price.

Best Occasion Fit

Family Holiday

For a family of four or five working a week of beach mornings and self-catered dinners, the two-bedroom villas at Magens Point are the practical case. The full kitchen lets you reset breakfast logistics, the second bedroom gives children their own space, the grocery store on site reduces the daily errand load, and the beach shuttle handles the only daily commute that matters. Parents who want resort childcare and a teen scene at the pool should look at Ritz-Carlton or Westin; parents who want a kitchen and a balcony stay here.

Solo Retreat

For a solo traveller wanting a quiet week of swimming, reading, and not eating in restaurants every night, the studios on the bay side make a sensible booking. The kitchenette is enough for breakfasts and a simple dinner, the balcony reads as a private terrace overlooking the bay, the pool is rarely crowded outside school holidays, and the location is far enough from the cruise port to feel residential rather than touristed.
