The Hotel

Conrad Algarve opened in 2012 as Hilton's first Conrad-branded hotel in continental Europe outside the Conrad Brussels — the brand's flagship for Iberia and the contemporary five-star answer to the older Pine Cliffs and Vila Vita estates further west on the coast. The property sits inside the 800-hectare Quinta do Lago estate, a gated luxury enclave inside the Ria Formosa Natural Park that has functioned as the Algarve's premier residential-and-golf address since the 1970s. The architecture is the property's most distinctive feature — designed by Catalan firm RCR Arquitectes (Aranda, Pigem and Vilalta), winners of the 2017 Pritzker Prize, in a low-rise contemporary idiom of corten steel, board-marked concrete, and full-height glazing that frames the lagoon and the surrounding pine-and-cork landscape.

The 154 keys are exclusively suite-or-larger configurations — there are no standard rooms in the inventory. Deluxe Rooms start at a 47-square-metre footprint with private balcony or terrace; Junior Suites at 76 square metres; the named suites (the Premier Lake View, the Conrad Suite, the Royal Penthouse) climb to 250 square metres for the headline unit. Every category has a private balcony, a marble bathroom with separate rain shower and freestanding tub, and the considered Conrad bedding programme. The Royal Penthouse — the flagship — is a duplex two-bedroom unit on the top floor with a 200-square-metre wraparound terrace, a private outdoor pool, and the only direct private view across the entire Quinta do Lago lagoon network.

The dining programme is anchored by Gusto by Heinz Beck — a contemporary Mediterranean tasting room overseen by the German-Italian chef who runs the three-Michelin-star La Pergola at the Rome Cavalieri. Gusto holds one Michelin star and is the most decorated dining address inside the Quinta do Lago estate; the menu sits at €185 per person for the eight-course dégustation. Dado is the all-day brasserie; Louro is the Portuguese-Mediterranean restaurant overlooking the lagoon; Living Lounge is the cocktail bar. The Conrad's Gusto is the closest thing the central Algarve has to a serious capital-grade tasting menu room — and the only Michelin-starred restaurant inside Quinta do Lago.

The position is the third proposition: inside the gated Quinta do Lago estate, the property has direct buggy access to the Quinta do Lago South (Joseph Lee, 1974), the Quinta do Lago North (William Mitchell, 1990 — redesigned by Beau Welling 2014), and the Laranjal (Jorge Santana da Silva, 2010) championship courses. The Faro Airport is 25 minutes by car; the Ria Formosa wetlands and the boat-only barrier-island beaches at Praia do Ancão are five minutes by buggy. The Conrad runs an estate-wide complimentary buggy shuttle for guests, the most reliable way to navigate the gated property's fifteen-kilometre internal road network. Across every objective measure — the architecture, the dining, the suite inventory, the position inside the gated estate — the Conrad Algarve is the strongest contemporary five-star on the coast.
