Anniversary Honeymoon Proposal Historic / Heritage

"The most romantic Modernist façade on Passeig de Gràcia, and a roof that frames the Sagrada Família from across the entire Eixample. Mariano Fuster commissioned it as a gift for his wife. Stayed a private home for fifty years. The bloodline still shows."

The Hotel

Casa Fuster was commissioned by the Mallorcan industrialist Mariano Fuster i Fuster as a gift for his wife Consuelo Fabra y Puig and built between 1908 and 1911 by Lluís Domènech i Montaner — the same architect who simultaneously designed the Palau de la Música Catalana (1905-1908) two streets south, and the Hospital de Sant Pau (1901-1930) up the hill. At completion the building was reputed to be the most expensive private house in Barcelona, occupying the wedge-shaped corner where Passeig de Gràcia meets the Avinguda Diagonal — the first façade you see when descending Passeig de Gràcia from Gràcia village toward the Eixample. Pink Carrara marble columns flank the entrance; the upper-floor balconies use the floral wrought-iron vocabulary Domènech is internationally known for.

The Fuster family sold the property to the publishing group ENHER in 1962; it remained an office building for thirty years and was acquired by the Hoteles Center group, who carried out a comprehensive five-year restoration. Casa Fuster opened as a hotel in March 2004 with 96 rooms, expanded subsequently to 105. The restoration retained every feature of architectural significance — the marble columns of the lobby, the original Café Vienés ceiling, the iron-and-glass entrance canopy, the Carrara staircase — while modernising every guest-facing system. The hotel sits today within the Hesperia portfolio (Hesperia Hyatt JV partnership) but operates under its independent Casa Fuster name.

The 105 rooms (including 22 suites) are arranged across the historic floors of the original house. The Domènech Suite occupies the corner bay window facing Passeig de Gràcia and Diagonal — the building's signature elevation — and is the most-requested category. Standard rooms are smaller than the contemporary five-star average (around 26 square metres) but the trade is for the historic envelope and the Modernist detailing preserved in every room. Bathrooms were renovated 2018-2019; the upper floor rooms have larger windows and the original ceiling heights of the 1911 design.

The Café Vienés — the lobby café-bar, restored to Domènech's 1911 specification — is the property's central public room and one of Barcelona's most photographed interiors. Woody Allen plays clarinet there with the Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band when filming or holidaying in Barcelona; a black-and-white framed photograph of Allen on the bar marks the appearances. The Galaxó Restaurant on the first floor runs Catalan-Mediterranean cooking under chef Jeroni Castell. The rooftop terrace and pool — Casa Fuster's most famous public moment — runs the building's full Diagonal-facing roofline with a small infinity pool, a cocktail bar, and the singular 360-degree view across the entire Eixample roofline towards the Sagrada Família in the east, the Mediterranean in the south, and the Tibidabo hill in the north. The rooftop is the most-booked sunset cocktail address in Barcelona.

Best Occasion Fit

Anniversary

A Barcelona anniversary at Casa Fuster has the architectural depth that the city's contemporary five-stars cannot match. The Domènech Suite for milestone years — corner bay window over Passeig de Gràcia and Diagonal — is the best-positioned hotel suite in Barcelona for the address alone. Pre-dinner cocktails on the rooftop watching the sun set on the Sagrada Família, then Galaxó for dinner, then Café Vienés for a nightcap. The whole anniversary inside one Modernist building.

Honeymoon

Honeymooners booking a Modernist Barcelona chapter find Casa Fuster the literal answer — the hotel by the architect of the Palau de la Música, on the address Domènech designed as a wedding present. Junior Suites with the Passeig de Gràcia balconies are the central honeymoon booking; the rooftop pool runs quiet at midday in May and September. The hotel arranges private after-hours access to the Palau de la Música two blocks south.

Proposal

For Barcelona proposals the rooftop at sunset is the city's most reliable answer. The Sagrada Família frame, the cocktail-bar privacy, the option of a private booking for the Diagonal-facing terrace section. The hotel will arrange a roses-to-the-table pre-dinner cocktail and a private rooftop reservation; subsequent dinner downstairs at Galaxó or off-property at one of the hotel's preferred Eixample tables.
