"The Riverhouse is the Bend property where the river does the heavy lifting: rooms open onto the bank, trails leave from the lawn, and the kitchen at CURRENTS is steadier than its grade suggests. It is the answer to a family week in Central Oregon."

The Hotel

The Riverhouse sits on a ten-acre site on the west bank of the Deschutes River, about three minutes by car or fifteen minutes on foot from the Old Mill District. The arrival reads as a Pacific Northwest lodge rather than a resort hotel: timber cladding, river-rock columns, a low-pitched portico, and a lobby anchored by a basalt fireplace. The 223 rooms are arranged across three connected lodge buildings, the original 1972 wing, the 1980s expansion, and a 2015 renovation that lifted the interiors out of their previous era. Most rooms face either the river or the property's central courtyard, and around seventy directly overlook the water with private balconies or patios at ground level.

Rooms run from standard kings and queens (around 350 square feet) up to one-bedroom riverside suites (around 600 square feet) with separate sitting areas and gas fireplaces. The post-renovation palette is a quiet read of slate, oak, and pewter, with fly-tying themed prints, Pendleton-style throws, and large soaking tubs in the upper categories. River-view king rooms are the sweet spot for a couple, the riverside suite is the right pick for a small family, and the two-room suites at the south end of the property work for groups of four to six who want a single key with two real bathrooms.

CURRENTS is the on-site restaurant and one of the unsung kitchens in Central Oregon. The chef leans into Pacific Northwest ingredients, locally raised lamb, Oregon coast halibut, a strong charcuterie board, and a wine list weighted toward Willamette pinot and Walla Walla syrah. The breakfast service is the practical workhorse: a daily buffet plus a hot menu, generous, fast, and the right shape for a family that needs to be on the river by ten. The riverside patio runs from May through September with live music on weekends.

The pool deck is the property's other strong card. Two pools, an indoor twenty-five-metre and a heated outdoor pool with a hot tub, run year round, and the lawn rolls directly onto the Deschutes River Trail, a paved corridor that runs roughly nineteen miles through Bend. Fly fishing is on the property line; guides can be arranged through the front desk with twenty-four hours' notice. The Riverhouse also runs a small spa with four treatment rooms and a fitness centre that opens at five. Service is friendly and informal rather than polished, the staff is unusually long-tenured for a property of this size, and the front desk's working knowledge of Mount Bachelor lift schedules and Smith Rock approach trails is the operational signature.

Best Occasion Fit

Family Holiday

For a Bend family week, the Riverhouse is the most practical booking in the city. The two-room suites give parents and children separate bedrooms with two bathrooms at a price that competes with smaller properties; the indoor and outdoor pools run year round; and the Deschutes River Trail leaves from the lawn, which means a stroller, a scooter, or a junior cyclist can be moving in under five minutes. The on-site restaurant, the proximity to the Old Mill District, and the easy drive to Mount Bachelor make this the only Bend address where a family of four can spend a week without ever needing a car twice in the same day.

Solo Retreat

For a solo trip built around the river, the Riverhouse is the address that puts you on the water without any logistical friction. Book a river-view king on the north end of the property, take coffee on the balcony, and the morning fly-fishing run is essentially out the front door. The pool deck and the small spa do the recovery work after a day at Smith Rock or on the Bachelor crater rim. It is a quiet, unstaged property for the kind of solo traveler who wants the river to be the centre of the week rather than the bar.
