Business Anniversary Solo Retreat Boutique

"Downtown Bend's only AAA Four-Diamond hotel, a 59-key boutique with an underground dining room and the most consistent service in town. Walk to dinner, walk to the Old Mill, walk to a craft brewery; the resort version of Bend is an option, not a requirement."

The Hotel

The Oxford Hotel Bend opened in 2010 inside a six-story new-build on the corner of Minnesota and Lava in downtown Bend, the only AAA Four-Diamond property inside the city limits. The building reads as a contemporary read on a turn-of-the-century downtown hotel, brick-and-cor-ten exterior, broad sash windows, a porte cochere on Minnesota; inside the lobby is a dark, low-lit room with a wood-and-bronze bar set against polished concrete floors. The intent is metropolitan rather than alpine, and the result is the city's most unambiguously hotel-like hotel. Many Bend properties feel like extensions of a resort, an inn, or a brewery; the Oxford feels like a hotel.

The 59 guestrooms occupy the upper five floors. Standard rooms are 400 square feet with King beds; the larger Premier and Specialty categories add a soaking tub or a chrome-claw bathtub set into a tiled corner, a separate sitting area, and the property's signature window-fronted seating bays for the western Cascade view. Top-floor Lava Suites stretch to 900 square feet across two rooms with kitchenettes. Bedding hardware is Tempur-Pedic across all categories, bathrooms are marble-floor with rain showers and deep tubs, and every room holds a high-end espresso setup and a properly stocked refreshment bar. The interior design is a deliberate contrast with the Pacific Northwest cliche, jewel-tone velvets, brass and bronze hardware, dark walnut case goods, and the kind of city-hotel formality that does not exist anywhere else in Bend.

The food anchor is 10 Below, the subterranean restaurant beneath the lobby, with vault doors, exposed brick walls, and one of the most ambitious modern American menus in Central Oregon. Chef Kelly Howard runs a tasting-menu format on weekends and an a la carte programme on weekdays; the dry-aged ribeye and the Oregon spot prawn course are the menu's anchors. The Vault Lounge holds the bar program with a regionally heavy whiskey list and one of the best classic-cocktail kitchens in the state. Breakfast runs in the same room, plated, with an espresso bar that opens at 6:30. Coffee, tea and bottled water are complimentary in the lobby through the day.

The wellness floor sits in the basement and is one of the hotel's strongest plays: a 60-foot indoor saltwater pool with a deep blue tile finish, a separate hot tub, a steam room, an aromatherapy shower, a full fitness studio with Peloton bikes, and a four-room spa running a quiet treatment programme. The location is the property's other quietest weapon. Drake Park is two blocks west, the Old Mill District is a fifteen-minute walk along the Deschutes River Trail, and a dozen of Bend's best restaurants and breweries are within four blocks; the hotel publishes a walking map that genuinely covers the night. Service is metropolitan in calibration, the most polished in Central Oregon, and tested adequate for the AAA Four-Diamond rating that has been continuously held since 2012.

Best Occasion Fit

Business

For a Bend business stay, the Oxford is the only address that delivers a Four-Diamond room product, a proper subterranean dinner room, and walking access to client offices on the Old Mill corridor. The conference suite holds eighteen comfortably; the WiFi runs enterprise-grade through dedicated access points; and the property concierge will arrange a private dining room at 10 Below on three hours' notice. The booking advantage over the resort options is the city-center geography; the booking penalty is no golf.

Anniversary

Book a Premier Lava Suite, the chrome-claw tub configuration, and a 10 Below counter-seated tasting menu. Walk to drinks at Crater Lake Spirits or McMenamins after the meal; back through Drake Park at dusk; spa treatment on the morning of the anniversary day. Bend in the city-center mode rather than the resort mode, more European than the rest of Central Oregon, and a property that knows how to mark a milestone without staging it.

Solo Retreat

For a solo travel weekend, the Oxford is the rare hotel where a single guest is at the bar by name on the second night and not invisible by the third. A King Premier on the fourth floor, an open table at 10 Below at the counter, the indoor pool at six the next morning, the Phil's Trail trailhead in the rental car by nine. The book-and-balcony version of the same trip is possible without leaving the hotel for forty hours.
