Regent Berlin

The 195-room grand hotel on Gendarmenmarkt — IHG's Regent flagship in Germany since the November 2019 rebrand from Four Seasons, with Charlotte & Fritz in the glass-roofed garden courtyard and a position three minutes from the Konzerthaus.

Anniversary Business Honeymoon Five-Star

"The hotel that was Berlin's Four Seasons for two decades and lost almost nothing in the conversion — same Schinkel-square address, same staff bench, same Charlotte & Fritz courtyard at lunch. Now flying the Regent brand and quietly cheaper for it."

The Hotel

Regent Berlin occupies an entire block of Charlottenstrasse on the eastern flank of Gendarmenmarkt — Karl Friedrich Schinkel's 1821 Konzerthaus to the south, the Französischer Dom to the north, the Deutscher Dom directly opposite. The current building opened in 1996 as the city's first post-reunification five-star hotel; it operated as Four Seasons Berlin from opening until November 2019, when IHG converted the property to its newly-revived Regent flagship. The conversion was unusually clean — the same operating team, the same private-banking and embassy concierge book, the same Mitte position three minutes' walk from Unter den Linden — and the rebrand quietly recalibrated the hotel a tier below its former pricing into a category where it now offers the best value-per-square-metre in any Berlin five-star.

The 195 rooms — 156 doubles and 39 suites — are arranged across eight floors of the main building, with the better Gendarmenmarkt-facing categories on the upper floors looking south to the Konzerthaus colonnade. Standard rooms run a generous 32–38 square metres with marble bathrooms, working antique-style desks, sound-proofed double-glazed windows, mini-fridge bars and Nespresso. The Junior Suites and Executive Suites add separate sitting rooms; the named Presidential Suite is the top-floor corner with a wraparound terrace facing both Schinkel's Konzerthaus and the Französischer Dom. Every room and corridor was refreshed during the 2019 rebrand and the 2023 soft-furnishings programme — the building does not feel its 30 years.

Charlotte & Fritz is the all-day restaurant and the property's signature room — a glass-roofed garden courtyard at the heart of the floor plan, named for two Berlin institutions (Charlottenburg Palace and Frederick the Great's mother) and serving a contemporary German menu with strong vegetable and game seasons. The Bar is the panelled cocktail and afternoon-tea room facing Charlottenstrasse; afternoon tea here remains one of Berlin's most decorated. The lower-ground spa runs a heated indoor pool and a small fitness suite. The original Four Seasons-era staff bench has carried over almost intact, which is the hotel's quiet competitive advantage.

Position is the second proposition: Gendarmenmarkt at the doorstep, Unter den Linden three minutes north, Französische Strasse U-Bahn one minute, the Komische Oper and Staatsoper Unter den Linden walking distance, the Bundestag district 12 minutes by tram. Berlin's banking and law firms are on Friedrichstrasse and Behrenstrasse around the corner; the Embassy quarter at Pariser Platz is six minutes on foot. For Berlin business stays at the level where the lobby matters, Regent is the calmest five-star option in Mitte; for Berlin anniversaries and milestone weekends, the Gendarmenmarkt-facing suites with Konzerthaus sightlines are the booking that justifies the price.

Best Occasion Fit

Anniversary

A Berlin anniversary at Regent is the considered version: a Gendarmenmarkt-facing Junior Suite with the Konzerthaus colonnade through the window, dinner at Charlotte & Fritz, afternoon tea in the panelled bar, the Staatsoper or Konzerthaus one street away. The concierge runs the city's strongest theatre and opera book and the bar staff have been there since the Four Seasons era.

Business

For Berlin business stays in Mitte at the level where Friedrichstrasse and Behrenstrasse banking and law are the working geography, Regent is the calmest five-star option — quieter than Adlon (which carries the diplomatic tour traffic) and better positioned than the Potsdamer Platz set. Charlotte & Fritz at lunch is reliable; the meeting rooms scale to 200; the executive lounge is open all day.

Honeymoon

A Berlin honeymoon two- or three-night base at Regent works because the hotel hands over an unusually generous suite for the rate (the Junior Suite is essentially a small one-bedroom apartment), the Gendarmenmarkt position is the city's most cinematic square at night, and the property's staff fluency carries the romantic brief without the pricing premium of Adlon.
