Forty rooms and private homes on a cliff 1,200 feet above the Pacific. Sierra Mar restaurant with Wine Spectator Grand Award. The defining luxury cliff-edge hotel of California.
"The cliff-edge hotel California has been measuring the rest against since 1992. The view does work no other property in the country can replicate."
Post Ranch Inn opened in 1992 on a 100-acre cliff-top site at 47900 Highway 1, roughly 30 minutes south of Carmel and 30 minutes from Monterey Regional Airport. The property was developed by Mike Freed (managing partner, Passport Resorts), Bill Post (rancher, fourth-generation Big Sur native whose family had homesteaded the site), and the local architect Mickey Muennig — and the architecture was, from inception, the property's defining proposition. Muennig's brief was to design rooms that integrated with the landscape rather than perch on it; the result is the famous Ocean Grass Rooms with their living-roof grass-and-wildflower coverings, the Tree Houses elevated in the redwoods, and the Cliff Houses cantilevered toward the Pacific.
There are 40 rooms and private homes total, distributed across multiple architectural typologies: Ocean Grass Rooms, Cliff Houses, Tree Houses, Pacific Suites, Coast Houses, Mountain Houses, Butterfly Houses, and the largest configurations as private homes on the property. Every accommodation has the Pacific or the mountains in unobstructed view; every accommodation has a wood-burning fireplace, organic linens, and a private deck or terrace. The Pacific Suites with curved walls and the Cliff Houses with their full cliff exposure are the most-photographed categories. Adults-only — children under 18 are not permitted.
Sierra Mar — the property's signature restaurant — sits on the cliff edge with floor-to-ceiling glass and the Pacific spanning the dining room view. The cuisine is California-Mediterranean-French; the Wine Spectator Grand Award has been continuous for over a decade with a cellar of 14,000+ bottles. Daily breakfast and dinner come included with every stay. The Bar is the casual cocktail and lounge programme. The pool deck on the lower property has the famous infinity pool, and Big Sur's coastal trail starts on the property line. The Post Ranch Spa is undergoing complete reimagining and expansion, scheduled to reopen in June 2026 — the new facility doubles the treatment-room footprint and adds a thermal-immersion suite.
The location 30 minutes south of Carmel places the property in the heart of Big Sur, with the Bixby Bridge to the north and the cinematic Highway 1 stretches in both directions. Most guests stay on-property — the bar at sunset, the pool at midday, the cliffside walk in the morning fill out a slow day with rhythm. For honeymoons, anniversaries, proposals, and milestone-trip stays where the brief is "the hotel that defined the cliff-edge hotel category", Post Ranch Inn is the unambiguous answer in California.
The defining California honeymoon. Book a Cliff House or Pacific Suite. Sierra Mar dinner, the infinity pool at sunset, and a morning hike along the Coast Ridge trail fill the right rhythm. The adults-only policy keeps the property in a single tonal register.
Sierra Mar handles milestone anniversaries with the discipline of a Wine Spectator Grand Award kitchen and one of the strongest Pacific Coast Highway settings in the country. The Coast Houses are the right rooms for major-anniversary stays.
The lower infinity pool deck at sunset, the cliff edge above Sierra Mar at the property's panoramic point, and the private deck of the higher Pacific Suites are the three settings the property arranges most. Events team coordinates photographer, florist, and the dinner choreography afterward.
