The Hotel

The Le Grand Hôtel building was commissioned in 1771 and completed in 1776 by the architect Victor Louis — the same architect responsible for the Grand Théâtre directly across Place de la Comédie (1773-1780) and for the Palais Royal extensions in Paris — as the principal urban-grand hotel of Bordeaux's late-18th-century commercial-Atlantic peak. The building stood as a working hotel through the 19th and 20th centuries before its long closure from 1990 to 2007. The IHG-led restoration directed by Parisian interior architect Pierre-Yves Rochon (who has worked on most of the Four Seasons George V Paris's interior register) reopened the property as InterContinental Bordeaux Le Grand Hotel on 22 December 2007 with the original 1776 Victor Louis facade preserved and a contemporary five-star programme behind it.

The 130 rooms — including 44 suites — are arranged across the building's five floors. Standard categories begin at 30 sqm; the Junior Suites at 50 sqm add the Place de la Comédie front view; the Royal Suite at 240 sqm is the milestone unit, with the original 1776 stuccoed ceiling preserved and a private balcony directly facing the Grand Théâtre. Bathrooms are travertine and brass; bath products are Guerlain, the property's spa partner. The Club InterContinental floor on level 5 handles the executive-level programme with private lounge and dedicated check-in.

Le Pressoir d'Argent — the named fine-dining room on the ground floor, opened with the 2007 restoration — runs a contemporary French register with deep verticals on Bordeaux Médoc and Saint-Émilion classed-growths from the property's 8,000-bottle cellar. The kitchen has held 2 Michelin stars continuously since 2017. Le Bordeaux is the all-day brasserie programme on Place de la Comédie. The Salon Mauriac handles the afternoon-tea register named for the Bordeaux-born novelist François Mauriac. The Spa Guerlain — the only Guerlain spa in south-west France — runs five treatment rooms over 800 square metres on the basement level with the indoor 12-metre lap pool. The fitness centre is on the lower-ground level.

The Place de la Comédie position is the unambiguous booking proposition. From the front door it is 60 seconds to the Grand Théâtre, three minutes to the Cours de l'Intendance and Cours du Chapeau Rouge retail axes, four minutes to the Place de la Bourse and the Miroir d'Eau, six minutes to the Saint-André Cathedral, and 12 minutes by car to Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport (BOD). For travellers wanting the central Bordeaux heritage-grand-hotel booking with the Le Pressoir d'Argent dinner programme, this is unambiguous. Les Sources de Caudalíe is the wine-country resort alternative; InterContinental is the city-centre answer.
