The restored 1886 Drechsler Palace on Andrássy Avenue, opposite the Hungarian State Opera — opened May 2023 as Marriott's W debut in Hungary, with 151 rooms, the WET Pool deck, and the most aggressively contemporary design programme inside a UNESCO-listed Budapest envelope.
"The most consequential luxury opening in Budapest in a decade. Lechner's 1886 Drechsler Palace — the original home of the Royal Hungarian Ballet School — sat empty for thirty-five years before its 2023 reopening as W Budapest, with Bowler James Brindley interiors that turn the Habsburg envelope into the city's most aggressively contemporary five-star."
The Drechsler Palace was completed in 1886 to designs by Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos as the headquarters of the Hungarian Railway Pension Fund. The building stands directly opposite the Hungarian State Opera on the southern flank of Andrássy Avenue, and from 1949 housed the Hungarian Ballet Institute (later the Hungarian Dance Academy) until its closure in 1990. After three decades of dereliction the palace was acquired by the Mellow Mood and Al Habtoor groups, restored over five years under preservation architect Tamás Noll, and reopened as W Budapest on 12 May 2023 — Marriott's first W in Hungary, the chain's twelfth W in Europe, and one of the most ambitious historic-envelope-meets-contemporary-design openings in Central Europe of the past decade.
Bowler James Brindley (the London design firm responsible for Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park and Six Senses Douro Valley) handled the interior programme. The result is a deliberately uncompromising contrast between the restored Lechner shell — the carved stone façades, the original neo-Renaissance staircase, the iron-and-glass courtyard roof — and a defiantly contemporary interior of saturated colour, custom Hungarian-craft commissions, and theatrical lighting. The 151 rooms (incl. 25 suites) are organised across the building's five floors with the better Andrássy-facing rooms looking directly across the boulevard at the State Opera. Standard Wonderful Rooms run 28–32 square metres; Spectacular Rooms a tier higher; the named Marvellous and Extreme WOW suites handle the upper end. The Extreme WOW Suite is the property's headline unit at 220 square metres with a private terrace.
The Living Room (W's signature lobby-and-cocktail venue) operates as the all-day social space and the cocktail bar through the evening; The Kitchen Table is the all-day restaurant under chef Gergely Lipták (Hungarian-Mediterranean cooking with a strong fish programme); the Bayan rooftop restaurant and bar — Persian-Mediterranean cooking on the open-air rooftop with the Andrássy boulevard view — is the property's headline F&B venue. The WET pool deck on the first floor (a heated indoor pool with a glass roof opening to the courtyard sky) is the city's most-photographed in-hotel pool deck after the Ritz-Carlton's; the AWAY Spa runs treatment rooms, sauna, hammam, and a 24-hour fitness centre. The FIT 24-hour gym is one of the largest in any Budapest hotel.
The position on Andrássy Avenue is the property's structural advantage — the State Opera (Erkel Theatre) thirty seconds across the boulevard, the House of Music (Müpa) at the eastern end, the Liszt Academy three minutes south-east, and the M1 Millennium Underground beneath the avenue (UNESCO-listed, 1896) at the corner. Aria Hotel is five minutes south-west on the other side of the Basilica; Anantara New York Palace is six minutes east on Erzsébet körút; The Ritz-Carlton at Erzsébet tér is four minutes south.
For Budapest bachelor and bachelorette stays where the in-hotel scene matters as much as the city, W Budapest is the obvious answer. The Living Room cocktail programme, the Bayan rooftop, the WET pool deck, the AWAY Spa for the pre-event-day calm, and the Andrássy ruin-bar district fifteen minutes south for the night programme.
A Budapest anniversary at W is the contemporary-design alternative to the Belle Époque grand-hotel options. A Spectacular Room facing Andrássy and the State Opera, an evening at the Hungarian State Opera (thirty-second walk), dinner at Bayan rooftop with the Andrássy view, an Omorovicza facial at AWAY Spa.
For Budapest honeymoons with a contemporary rather than historic register, W is the strongest answer in the city. The Marvellous Suites for the central booking; the Extreme WOW Suite for the milestone version; the Bayan rooftop is the structural in-hotel romantic dinner.
