The Hotel

Marriott Mena House Cairo opened originally in 1869 as a hunting lodge of Khedive Ismail Pasha, the ruler of Egypt who commissioned the property to host visiting dignitaries arriving for the Suez Canal opening, and was converted to a hotel in 1886 by the Locke-King family. The property has been continuously operated as a luxury hotel for nearly 140 years and has hosted, over its long operating history, an extraordinary list of notable guests including Winston Churchill, Theodore Roosevelt, Cecil Rhodes, King George V, Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, and most of the cinematic and political establishment of the 20th century. The Marriott brand has operated the property since 2001.

The 331 rooms split between the original 1869 main building (with restored period architectural features and the most coveted Pyramid View accommodations) and the more contemporary additions including the Garden Wing. The Garden View Rooms are the entry-level; the Pyramid View Rooms (with direct sightlines to the Great Pyramid) are the most coveted; the Junior Suites and Suites including the Royal Suite (the property's flagship) provide the larger configurations. The interiors integrate restored period detail with contemporary luxury bathrooms.

The grounds, the property's 40-acre gardens (one of the largest hotel gardens in Egypt, with the Pyramids visible across the desert from the garden's western edge), the heated outdoor swimming pool with Pyramid views, the spa, the 9-hole golf course, and the multi-restaurant complex, make Mena House comprehensively-equipped despite its heritage character. The Pyramids' direct visibility from many parts of the property is the defining feature.

Dining is at multiple restaurants. 139 Restaurant is the headline modern Mediterranean fine-dining (named for the property's 139th anniversary year). The Khan El Khalili is the Arabic. The Sultan Restaurant is the all-day with Pyramid views. The wine programme is comprehensive. Service is the consistent global Marriott standard delivered by a heavily Egyptian team. Marriott Mena House Cairo is Egypt's defining heritage luxury hotel and the answer for travellers who want the historic Pyramid-adjacent setting that the international travel imagination associates with Egypt.
