The Hotel

Hotel Esencia occupies what was, until 1998, the private 50-acre Yucatán Caribbean estate of Donna Giuseppina Mottana — an Italian duchess who built the villa in the 1970s as her personal Riviera Maya residence. The property was acquired and converted to a small luxury hotel in 1998 by Mexican developer Eduardo Cruz Tirado, with 42 accommodations distributed across the restored main villa, additional buildings constructed sympathetically, and the restored beachfront. The property's setting — a private 50-acre cove on Xpu-Ha Beach between Playa del Carmen and Tulum — is unusual at this scale.

The 42 accommodations split between Garden View Rooms (in the restored estate buildings), Beachfront Rooms (with direct Caribbean access), Garden Suites with private pools, Beachfront Suites with private pools, and the multi-bedroom Casa Ducha and Casa Eduardo (the original duchess's main residence — a multi-bedroom standalone villa with its own pool, garden, and chef on request). The interiors are warm Mexican-Italian with original duchess-era furniture preserved alongside contemporary updates.

The grounds — the 50-acre estate including the restored gardens, the kilometre of private Xpu-Ha Beach, the heated swimming pool, the Sē Spa (with treatment pavilions in the gardens), the cooking pavilion, and the property's own organic garden supplying the kitchen — are the property's defining advantage. Xpu-Ha Beach is consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the Riviera Maya, with white sand and turquoise water on a protected cove.

Dining is at the property's two main restaurants. Mistura is the headline modern Mediterranean-Mexican fine-dining under chef Andrei Aldea (former Pujol). Apuro is the more relaxed garden-side Mexican specialty restaurant. The wine programme is exceptional — particularly Italian and Mexican producers, drawing on the duchess's original cellar interest. Service is the most personal in any Riviera Maya luxury hotel — the staff-to-guest ratio is exceptionally high, the property's small scale means staff know guests within hours, and the experience is closer to staying at a private estate than at a hotel. Hotel Esencia is the answer for travellers who want the most personal Riviera Maya luxury — and the property is closer to Tulum than Cancún proper but is consistently included in the Cancún luxury circuit.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

The most personal Riviera Maya honeymoon. Book a Beachfront Suite with private pool, or for a milestone honeymoon, the multi-bedroom Casa Eduardo. The Mistura tasting-menu dinner; the daily yoga at the beach pavilion; the spa programme. The honeymoon at Hotel Esencia is the deepest, most-private version of the Caribbean luxury honeymoon between Cancún and Tulum.

Anniversary

For milestone anniversaries Casa Eduardo (the original duchess's residence, a multi-bedroom villa) or two adjacent Beachfront Suites with private pools work. The property's small scale makes anniversary stays feel like staying at a private home. The Mistura chef's table; private dinners on the beach; vow renewals at the small chapel — all handled with the discretion of a property that regularly hosts these occasions.

Wellness Retreat

Sē Spa Hotel Esencia runs Mayan-traditional treatments, yoga, and the property's chef-led nutritional programme as integrated wellness. For travellers who want the wellness component to be substantively-considered alongside the beach setting and the Mediterranean-Mexican food.
