The Hotel

Villa Cora began life in the late 1860s, when Florence briefly served as the capital of the newly unified Kingdom of Italy, as Villa Oppenheim, commissioned by Baron Gustave Oppenheim in honour of his young bride Eugenia Fenzi. The neoclassical villa was designed by the architects Pietro Comparini and Giuseppe Poggi (Poggi being the same architect responsible for Florence's Piazzale Michelangelo and the urban plan that briefly served the city's capital years). After Oppenheim, the villa passed to Empress Eugenie de Montijo, the Spanish-born widow of Napoleon III, who used it as her Florentine residence in the 1880s and turned it into a salon for the Florentine nobility. The villa was acquired in 1894 by Egidio Cora, who gave the property its present name; his son Giuliano served as Italy's ambassador to multiple courts and hosted, among others, Enver Pasha and the Japanese Emperor Akihito (to whom the Imperial Suite remains dedicated). The villa opened as a hotel in the 1980s, was comprehensively restored 2007, 2010, and continues under the same family-influenced management within the Leading Hotels of the World programme.

The property's 46 rooms (38 in the main villa, 8 in the adjoining Villino) are scaled to the original residence's domestic geometry, Standard Classic Rooms run small (around 22 square metres) but the Junior Suites, Master Suites, and the Imperial Suite ascend through generous categories with Carrara-marble bathrooms, original parquet, and (in the Imperial and Royal Suites) the original frescoed ceilings preserved in place. The named historic halls, the Mirror Room (often described as Florence's most beautiful private ballroom), the Card Room, and the White Room with its monumental Carrara marble fireplace and a neoclassical statue at its centre, function as the property's public rooms; the Mirror Room is also the most photographed wedding venue in Florence at the level above the Pitti Palace's official locations.

Le Bistrot is the day restaurant on the panoramic terrace, Florentine cuisine with the city's full skyline (the Duomo, San Miniato, the Boboli Gardens, the Arno) directly in view. Taverna Machiavelli is the more formal dining room. The hotel's outdoor pool, set in the private park, is the only proper hotel pool inside the historic core of Florence and remains one of the property's defining differentiators, the Four Seasons has a pool but it is in the Palazzo della Gherardesca's private garden, not on a panoramic terrace; Villa Cora's pool sits at the level of the Florentine rooftops with the Duomo in line-of-sight from the lounger. The Bene Spa runs five treatment rooms with Etro and Comfort Zone product ranges; the Ottoman-revival Turkish bath is among the most architecturally interesting hammams in any Italian hotel.

The trade-off is the position. Villa Cora is approximately twenty-five minutes on foot down the hill into the Centro Storico, about ten minutes by taxi, and the property runs a complimentary shuttle service for guests. The reward is the seclusion: Villa Cora is the only Florence five-star where the city skyline arrives as a view from the breakfast terrace rather than as a footstep across the cobbles. For Florence couples, wellness travellers, or anyone for whom the trip's defining image is the city across the Arno seen from a lounger above the Boboli Gardens, Villa Cora is the clearest answer at the level above Belmond Villa San Michele.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

For a Florence honeymoon designed around the city as a view rather than a stage, Villa Cora is the answer. Junior Suites with terraces over the Boboli Gardens for the standard booking; the Imperial Suite (with the original frescoed ceiling and the Akihito association) for the milestone version. Breakfast on the panoramic terrace and aperitivo at the outdoor pool with the Duomo in line of sight is the central image of the trip.

Anniversary

A Villa Cora anniversary calibrates by suite category, Deluxe with park view for the quiet weekend, Master Suite with terrace for the milestone year, Imperial Suite for a major one. The Mirror Room can be privately set for a milestone dinner; Taverna Machiavelli is the in-house alternative; the spa programme handles the cinematic version of the rest day. The seclusion is the proposition that the river-front addresses can't match.

Wellness Retreat

For the wellness-coded Florence trip, Villa Cora is the most considered answer. The Bene Spa with the Ottoman-revival hammam, the outdoor pool in the private park, the panoramic-terrace breakfast, and the freedom from the Centro Storico's day-noise are the central programme. Etro and Comfort Zone product ranges; package programming runs three- to seven-day formats with kitchen alignment from Le Bistrot.

Frequently asked questions

Last updated June 11, 2026

Where is Villa Cora located?
On the wooded slopes above the Boboli Gardens, just south of central Florence, set in its own private park. It is one of the few Florence luxury hotels where the city is a view across the valley rather than a street outside the window, and it has both a private park and an outdoor pool.
What is the history of Villa Cora?
The neoclassical villa was built in the late 1860s as Villa Oppenheim for Baron Gustave Oppenheim, designed by Pietro Comparini and Giuseppe Poggi, the architect of Piazzale Michelangelo. Empress Eugenie de Montijo used it as her Florentine residence in the 1880s, and Egidio Cora bought it in 1894, giving it its present name.
How many rooms does Villa Cora have?
Forty-six rooms and suites, with 38 in the main villa and 8 in the adjoining Villino. Standard Classic Rooms run small at around 22 square metres, while the Junior, Master, and Imperial suites are considerably larger, some with original frescoed ceilings preserved in place.
Does Villa Cora have a pool and spa?
Yes. It has the Bene Spa and an outdoor pool set in its private park, described as the most secluded hotel pool in Florence. The pool is seasonal, so confirm opening dates if you are travelling outside the warmer months.
What is the Mirror Room at Villa Cora?
The villa's historic ballroom, frequently called the most beautiful private ballroom in Tuscany. Along with the Card Room and the White Room with its monumental Carrara marble fireplace, it is one of the original named state halls preserved from the building's years as a residence.
Which Villa Cora suite has the best pedigree?
The Imperial Suite is dedicated to Emperor Akihito of Japan, who stayed here, and the upper suites keep their original frescoed ceilings. Rooms and suites on the garden side look out over the private park and across the valley toward the city.
How much does Villa Cora cost?
Rooms start at around 600 euros per night, and the property is a member of Leading Hotels of the World. It was comprehensively restored in 2007 and 2010 after first opening as a hotel in the 1980s.
Who is Villa Cora best for?
Couples on a honeymoon, anniversary, or wellness trip who want quiet, greenery, and a pool over a stage-front city-centre address. The trade-off is the hillside location: you are a short drive or a longer walk from the Duomo rather than steps from it.
