The Hôtel des Bergues opened in 1834 on the right bank of the Rhône, on the corner of land where the river leaves Lake Geneva — a piece of property the city had reclaimed from the lake a few years earlier as part of the harbour-and-quayside redevelopment that gave Geneva its modern lakefront. The building was the first true grand hotel in the city, designed by the architect Antoine Vaucher in a restrained Restauration-classical idiom and conceived as the meeting place for Geneva's growing diplomatic, commercial, and cultural traffic.
