Smugglers Cove Inn

A twenty-room waterfront inn on the lower side of Montague Street, with private balconies set directly over the harbour, a generous included breakfast, and parking that quietly solves the most aggravating problem of a Lunenburg weekend.

"The room is plain, the breakfast is generous, and the balcony hangs over the harbour close enough to hear the rigging on the Bluenose II at first light. For most travellers, that combination is the whole point of a Lunenburg booking."

The Hotel

Smugglers Cove Inn occupies a long, low-slung waterfront site on the harbour side of Montague Street, the lower of Lunenburg's two main retail spines. Where the Old Town's heritage inns sit on the upper terraces and look across the rooftops, Smugglers Cove sits at water level: rooms on the harbour side open directly onto the waterfront, with the masts of the Bluenose II, the Theresa E. Connor schooner, and the dory shop visible from the balcony rails. The site itself is functional rather than picturesque, a 1980s-era purpose-built inn rather than a converted captain's house, and the value proposition is the address, not the architecture.

The 20 rooms run across two principal categories. Standard Queens and Kings face the street or interior courtyard at the entry price; Harbour View rooms (a slim majority of the inventory) face the water and carry a roughly C$60 to C$100 surcharge depending on season. Several of the upper-floor harbour rooms have small private balconies that step out over the water, and these are the only rooms in the inn worth booking; the standard street-facing categories give up the entire reason to choose this property. Interiors are plain, well kept, freshly carpeted, with private bathrooms, climate control, flat-screen televisions, and complimentary WiFi. The aesthetic is neutral coastal rather than designed, but the rooms are larger than the heritage stock further up the hill.

There is no on-site restaurant beyond breakfast, which is included in every rate, served in a sea-facing room off the lobby, and is one of the genuine pleasures of a stay here, plated hot dishes, decent coffee, fresh fruit, and an unhurried morning rhythm. For lunch and dinner, the entire Old Town restaurant inventory sits within a four-minute walk: the Fish Shack on the waterfront a hundred metres away, the Salt Shaker Deli, Magnolia's Grill, and Grand Banker Bar & Grill on Montague, and the South Shore Fish Shack on the way back up to the Boscawen ridge. The inn keeps a small lobby honour bar in the evening.

What Smugglers Cove does better than any other inn in town is parking. The lot wraps the building on three sides and is included in every rate, which is the single most underrated benefit in a town where overnight street parking in the Old Town is restricted from May through October and the public lots cost C$15 to C$20 per night. Service runs friendly, informal, and dependably present at the front desk through normal hours rather than the resident-innkeeper model upstairs at the heritage properties. The inn is open year-round, which separates it from the seasonal stock that closes November through April.

Best Occasion Fit

Anniversary

For a low-key anniversary on the South Shore where the harbour view does the heavy lifting and the room itself stays out of the way, Smugglers Cove is the practical booking. Request an upper-floor balcony harbour room (the south end of the building, room numbers ending 14 through 20 are the most generous), order breakfast onto the balcony when the weather permits, and walk three minutes to dinner at the Old Fish Factory or Salt Shaker. The night sound of rigging in the wind is the closest thing Lunenburg has to a signature.

Family Holiday

Two-queen rooms are the inn's most useful family configuration and are priced sensibly through July and August, the high travel weeks for South Shore family trips. Free parking removes the most aggravating constraint of bringing a vehicle into the Old Town, the Fisheries Museum is a 90-second walk along the wharf, and the schooner sailings depart from immediately in front of the building. For an under-twelve household on a four-night Maritime loop, this is the most operationally sensible Lunenburg base.
