"The old Bank of Canada vault is now a nightclub. That sentence is the whole thesis. Lofted ceilings, modern art, Square Victoria at the door — and a party that doesn't have to leave the building."

About W Montreal

W Montreal occupies the 1872 Bank of Canada building on Square Victoria — a Beaux-Arts landmark in the Quartier International, the city's polished business and design district. The original architects designed the building to project permanence and discretion, the visual language banks used to reassure depositors in the late nineteenth century: heavy stone, vaulted interiors, ornamental pediments. Walk under those carved cornices today and you arrive at a lobby that has been deliberately set against the building's history rather than continuous with it. The contrast is the point.

The hotel opened in 2004 as the W brand's flagship in Canada, and was at the time the most ambitious adaptive reuse of a financial-district landmark in the country. The conversion preserved the bones of the bank — the limestone façade, the soaring central hall, the original vault — and inserted a contemporary hotel inside the shell. Loft-style rooms occupy the upper floors, with double-height ceilings in the corner units, oversized industrial windows that frame the square below, and a furniture programme that leans more residential gallery than corporate hotel. The art collection, rotated regularly, is unusually serious for a hotel in this price tier.

Wunderbar is the legend. The original Bank of Canada vault — steel door, polished concrete, the proportions of a money-storage room rather than a dance floor — was converted into a low-ceilinged nightclub that has been one of Montreal's most consistent late-night addresses for two decades. The room is small, the sound system is correct, and the door policy keeps it the right kind of crowded. For groups celebrating something — bachelor parties, milestone birthdays, end-of-deal nights — the appeal is structural: the party is in the building, and the room you collapse into afterwards is a five-minute elevator ride upstairs.

The Living Room lounge, off the lobby, is the daylight version of the same idea — long banquettes, a fireplace, a cocktail menu that takes itself seriously without being precious about it. Breakfast is served here, and the room turns into one of the better afternoon work-and-meeting venues in the Quartier International once the laptops appear. The fitness floor is full-size and well-equipped; there is no full spa, which is consistent with the brand's positioning. This is not a hotel that pretends to be a wellness retreat, and it is the better for the honesty.

Location is the quiet advantage. Square Victoria sits between Vieux-Montreal and the modern downtown, with the Palais des congrès, the World Trade Centre, and the major law and finance firms all within a five-minute walk. Vieux-Port, the old town's restaurants, and the metro are equally close. For the business traveller who wants to walk to morning meetings and still be in a hotel with a real personality at night, the W has very few peers in Montreal. For everyone else, it is the design hotel that takes its building seriously and its evenings even more so.

Best Occasion Fit

Bachelor / Bachelorette

This is the obvious choice in Montreal, and for once the obvious choice is also the right one. Wunderbar in the old vault means the night never has to leave the building — which matters when the group is twelve people deep and the third bar of the evening is when logistics usually collapse. Book a block of loft rooms on the same floor, brief the front desk on the occasion, and let the hotel run the evening. Late check-out is generously granted to groups who behave through the lobby.

Anniversary

Not the obvious anniversary hotel — and that is precisely why it works for couples returning to the city where they met, or marking a date with a story rather than a milestone. Request a corner loft with the double-height windows, dinner at a Quartier International table the concierge can secure, and end the night in Wunderbar if you started the relationship in a basement club somewhere. For couples whose marriage has a soundtrack, this hotel keeps playing it.

Business

The Quartier International location puts you within a short walk of the Palais des congrès, the major Canadian law firms, and the global consultancies' Montreal offices. The Living Room is one of the better informal meeting venues downtown, the WiFi is fast and complimentary throughout, and the loft rooms are large enough to set up a real working desk. For the executive who would rather not stay in a hotel that feels like an extension of a conference centre, the W is the design-led alternative on the right block.
