The Hotel

Mandarin Oriental, Munich opened in November 2000 in a restored 1880 neo-Renaissance ballhaus building — originally built as a meeting and ball venue for Munich high society in the late 19th century — 200 metres from Marienplatz, the central square of Munich's Altstadt. The architectural restoration preserved every period architectural feature; Mandarin Oriental took over operations in 2000 and has continuously refined the property since. The 73-room scale makes Mandarin Oriental Munich one of the most boutique-luxury major Munich hotels.

The 73 accommodations split between the entry-level Deluxe Rooms (with restored period architectural features), Premier Rooms with the larger configurations, the Suites including the Marienplatz Suite (the property's flagship single accommodation, with substantial private terrace and direct Marienplatz views), and the multi-bedroom Suites. Every room retains the original 1880 architectural detail; the interiors integrate restored period elements with contemporary luxury bathrooms.

The grounds — the rooftop terrace with the property's signature heated rooftop pool overlooking Munich's Altstadt rooftops, the small spa, the fitness centre, and the multi-restaurant complex — give the property the boutique-luxury infrastructure. The rooftop pool is one of Munich's most-photographed luxury hotel pool settings, with views of the Frauenkirche and the broader Altstadt skyline.

Dining is at the property's main restaurant — Matsuhisa Munich (Nobu Matsuhisa's Munich outpost) — one of Germany's most-respected international restaurants. The Bar is the cocktail venue. The wine programme is comprehensive. Service is the consistent global Mandarin Oriental Asian-luxury operational discipline. Mandarin Oriental Munich is the most refined small-property Munich luxury and the answer for travellers who want the central Altstadt setting with the brand's signature service standards at the smallest possible scale.
