Balboa Bay Resort sits on a 15-acre bayfront estate at 1221 West Coast Highway — the only luxury hotel with direct waterfront access on Newport Bay's main harbour, where the Pacific Coast Highway meets the bay's western shoreline. The property has held the Balboa Bay name and operated as a private members'-club continuously since 1948, when the original Balboa Bay Club opened as a yachting-and-tennis club for Newport Beach's emerging mid-century elite (the original membership roster included John Wayne, Bob Hope, Humphrey Bogart, and Lauren Bacall — the property's signature Sailor's Daughter restaurant is named after the John Wayne-and-Pilar-Pallete daughter who grew up on the property's marina). The Balboa Bay Club operated as a private members' club until 2003, when current ownership Beverly Ray Realty Trust converted the property to a 159-key luxury hotel with the Balboa Bay Club component preserved as a parallel members' offering.
