The Old Bank House occupies the 1817 Georgian building at the foot of Front Street, two minutes on foot from Queen Street and directly across from Simcoe Park and the lake. The house was commissioned by the Bank of Upper Canada as its first branch outside York (now Toronto), and the original vault doors are still visible on the lower floor. It served as a private residence for most of the twentieth century and reopened as a nine-room guesthouse in 1989, run for most of the period since by a single owner-operator family. The building is listed under the Ontario Heritage Act and the renovation work has been resolutely faithful to the original plan.
The nine rooms and suites are distributed across three floors. Each is individually configured around the original room layout, so categories range from a 22 square metre Tower Room with twin windows onto the river to the 48 square metre Garden Suite with a private terrace and antique four-poster. Every room is air conditioned and individually furnished with period antiques, English fabrics, original art, and the kind of considered detail (writing desks with proper task lamps, decanter sets, individually selected reading material) that confirms this is a guesthouse rather than a hotel. The garden is the property's second signature feature. The half-acre lawn runs from the back of the house to the lakefront walking path, with mature horse chestnut trees, a long perennial border, and a stone terrace with iron furniture that sits open from May to October. The garden is functionally a private salon for house guests rather than a public space, and the afternoon there is the closest equivalent NOTL offers to a private English country house weekend. Service is run by the resident innkeeper and a small two-person daytime team, which means the guest is recognised on arrival and addressed by name throughout.
