La Quinta Resort opened in February 1926 as Walter Morgan's "La Quinta" — a 20-casita Hispanic-revival winter retreat tucked at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains, designed by Pasadena architect Gordon Kaufmann (later the architect of the Hoover Dam). The hotel pioneered the Coachella Valley's casitas-village format — separate adobe-styled cottages clustered around private pools and gardens rather than rooms in a single building — and remains the original example. Frank Capra wrote It Happened One Night here in 1933; Greta Garbo, Errol Flynn, William Powell, Joan Crawford, and Clark Gable were all repeat winter guests through the 1930s and 1940s. The property has been continuously operated as a hotel for 100 years; it is currently part of Hilton's Curio Collection (transitioned from the Waldorf Astoria collection in 2022).
The 781 keys are arranged across 45 landscaped acres — the original casitas plus expansions added through the mid-20th century in matching Hispanic-revival vernacular, all kept at one or two storeys to preserve the village character. Standard Resort Casitas run 540 square feet; Spa Casitas (closer to the spa) and Pool Casitas (with private patios opening to private courtyard pools) are the higher categories. The full Suite tier includes one- to four-bedroom freestanding casitas with their own walled gardens. Every casita has terracotta floors, beamed ceilings, a working fireplace (most are gas), and a private patio. The 2018–2020 renovation refreshed every casita interior while keeping every external elevation intact.
There are 41 pools across the property — most attached to small clusters of casitas, plus the central Plaza Las Flores main pool, the Adventure pool with waterslide for families, the Plaza pool by the original 1926 hotel building, and the lap pool by the spa. The Spa La Quinta is a 23,000-square-foot facility built around an outdoor mineral pool, with 23 treatment rooms and the desert region's most consistent treatment programme. Twin Palms (the hotel's signature restaurant) serves contemporary Mediterranean in the original 1926 dining room; Morgan's in the Desert handles the upmarket dinner; Adobe Grill the Mexican; the Plaza Café handles all-day; Twenty6 the lobby cocktail venue.
The five PGA West championship golf courses (TPC Stadium, Nicklaus Tournament, Greg Norman Course, Pete Dye Mountain, Pete Dye Dunes — all walkable from the resort) are the property's headline external proposition; PGA West is a perennial PGA Tour stop and the home of the American Express Championship. The 23 tennis courts are the strongest court complex of any Coachella Valley resort.
