Hotel Banke Opera

A 91-room 5-star inside the converted 1900 headquarters of the Banque Suisse et Française — a Paul Friesse and Cassien Bernard Haussmannian with a central staircase from the Eiffel workshop and a 19-metre glass cupola lobby with a 600-square-metre central mosaic.

"The hotel that arrives without warning when you walk into the lobby — a 19-metre glass cupola, a Friesse-Bernard Haussmannian, an Eiffel-workshop staircase, and the city's strangest hotel art collection: Egyptian, African, pre-Columbian, Roman, Buddhist."

The Hotel

The Banke Hotel occupies one of the first Haussmannian-style buildings constructed on rue La Fayette alongside the Opéra Garnier in the early 20th century. The original commission was for the headquarters of the Banque Suisse et Française, completed in 1900 to the designs of architects Paul Friesse and Cassien Bernard with the central staircase fabricated in the workshop of Gustave Eiffel — the same engineering studio that had completed the Eiffel Tower eleven years earlier. The site has deeper historical layers: during the 18th and 19th centuries, the position was occupied by the palace and gardens of Queen Hortense, wife of Louis Bonaparte and mother of Napoleon III, who was reportedly born here in 1808. The building is classified as a monument by the City of Paris.

The conversion to a 5-star hotel was completed in 2009 under the Catalan-headquartered Derby Hotels Collection, which retained the original banking-era envelope intact. The hotel's signature space is the lobby: a 19-metre-high glass cupola, originally designed to admit natural light into the bank's central trading floor, with a 600-square-metre central mosaic and a circular gallery floor on which the bar (Josefin Bar) and restaurant (Restaurant Lola) now operate. The space reads as a small Belle Époque cathedral and is the most architecturally distinctive hotel lobby in the 9th arrondissement; the hotel routinely hosts private events and fashion presentations under the cupola.

There are 91 rooms and suites — including 14 suites — across five floors, in five categories. Rooms are deliberately contemporary in design (rather than period pastiche), reflecting the Derby Collection's house style, with bold colour accents, polished-marble bathrooms, and a curated art programme that draws on owner Jordi Clos's significant private collection. The named Lafayette Suite, the property's signature unit, is a 90-square-metre top-floor space with a private terrace and skyline views toward Sacré-Cœur. A €4-million renovation completed in 2022 refreshed every room and suite while preserving the historic public spaces. Hotel Banke operates under the Marriott Autograph Collection brand standard with full Bonvoy programme integration.

The art collection is the unique proposition. The hotel's public spaces and corridors display archaeological artefacts — Egyptian, African, pre-Columbian, Roman, Buddhist — drawn from the Clos collection, which also stocks the Egyptian Museum of Barcelona; the rotation runs about every two years. The position handles the Opéra-corridor audience: the Opéra Garnier is three minutes on foot, Galeries Lafayette four, Printemps five, the Madeleine seven, and the Boulevard Haussmann grands magasins concentration runs straight from the door. For business travellers calibrating to the 9th arrondissement and the Boulevard Haussmann retail-and-finance district, Hotel Banke is the most architecturally serious option at the price scale.

Best Occasion Fit

Business

For business stays calibrated to the Opéra-Boulevard Haussmann corridor — fashion buying, retail, finance, advertising — Hotel Banke is the most useful five-star at the price point. The cupola lobby reads as a serious business-meeting room without the palace surcharge; the location is closer to Galeries Lafayette and Printemps than any palace hotel; the Bonvoy programme integration suits frequent travellers; rates run roughly half of palace-corridor equivalents.

Anniversary

For an Opéra-Garnier anniversary — opera, the Boulevard Haussmann grands magasins, Place de la Concorde at the end of the avenue — the Banke is the right address. The Lafayette Suite at the milestone tier; a Junior Suite for the calibrated weekend; dinner at Lola under the cupola; the Opéra Garnier four minutes for the evening performance. A more architecturally distinctive register than the standard palace template, at half the price.

Solo Retreat

For solo Paris stays calibrated to opera, ballet, gallery, and grands-magasins shopping, Hotel Banke is the most efficient address. The cupola lobby is a workable solo-dinner setting; the under-the-cupola Josefin Bar is one of the few hotel bars in the 9th where a solo drink reads as appropriate; the Opéra Garnier is three minutes; the Drouot auction houses are six.
