Via Veneto, Ludovisi  ·  Five-Star  ·  #6 in Rome

Hotel Eden Rome

Founded 1889, Dorchester Collection-managed since 2003, fully restored 2017 — 98 rooms above Via Veneto, the Michelin-starred La Terrazza rooftop, and the single best 360° rooftop view from any Roman five-star: Trinità dei Monti to the Vittoriano to St Peter's dome.

#6 in Rome
Honeymoon Anniversary Proposal Historic / Heritage

"Most Roman five-stars have a rooftop. The Eden has the rooftop — the one where you can identify the dome of every basilica between you and the Vatican before the espresso has cooled. The 2017 restoration kept the bones and replaced everything else, and the result is the most quietly excellent grand hotel in central Rome."

The Hotel

Hotel Eden was founded in 1889 by Francesco Nistelweck, a Bavarian-born hotelier who had previously run the Hotel des Iles Britanniques in Rome and saw the opportunity that the new Italian capital was offering for a quieter alternative to the Via Veneto grand hotels. The Eden was built on Via Ludovisi, one block above Via Veneto and a five-minute walk from the top of the Spanish Steps, in a stucco-faced Belle Époque building with elevators (a Roman first) and central heating (also a first). It quickly became the home for foreign visitors who wanted a less ceremonial address than the Excelsior or the Grand Hotel — Hemingway, Liz Taylor, Ingrid Bergman, Federico Fellini and the Roman Holiday production team all stayed in different decades, and the Eden was a centre of the Hollywood-on-Tiber moment of the 1950s and '60s.

Dorchester Collection acquired the management in 2003 and closed the hotel for an 18-month, €100m floor-to-ceiling restoration that reopened in April 2017. The restoration kept the original 1889 façade and the historic main staircase, gutted everything else, and rebuilt to a contemporary five-star standard with around twenty fewer rooms than before — the result is 98 rooms (including 14 suites), with average room sizes increased by roughly 30 percent. The room categories run from Deluxe (around 28 square metres) to Junior Suite, Bellevue Suite, and the Eden Penthouse Suite — the headline unit, a 230-square-metre two-bedroom apartment on the seventh floor with a private 70-square-metre terrace facing west toward the Vatican.

La Terrazza, the rooftop restaurant, has held one Michelin star since 2017 (the Eden held two from 2010 to 2013 with chef Heinz Beck before he moved on; the current iteration runs under chef Fabio Ciervo). The room is the centerpiece of the hotel — large windows on all four sides, an open kitchen, and a panoramic terrace open March through November with the most-photographed Roman skyline view at any five-star. Il Giardino is the all-day rooftop venue for breakfast, lunch, and aperitivo. The lobby-level Bar Eden is the after-dinner room. The Eden Spa includes treatment rooms, a fitness suite, and the only proper indoor pool inside an historic five-star in central Rome.

The position is the second proposition. The Eden sits at the top of the Ludovisi quarter, the residential pocket between Via Veneto and Villa Borghese — a six-minute walk to the Spanish Steps, ten to the Trevi Fountain, twelve to the Pantheon, and twenty to Piazza Navona. The American embassy is two streets away; the Galleria Borghese is six minutes on foot. The Eden does not compete with the J.K. Place on contemporary boutique-five-star intimacy or with the Six Senses on the spa-as-destination brief — but on the brief of a properly grand-hotel Roman address with a rooftop view that closes the deal, it is the city's most consistently strong answer.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

For Rome honeymoons the Eden is the most common right answer at the top end of the market. The Bellevue Suite (with a small private terrace facing the Roman skyline) is the standard honeymoon booking; the Eden Penthouse Suite for a milestone version. Dinner at La Terrazza, breakfast on Il Giardino — both rooftop, both panoramic — is the brief delivered as briefed.

Anniversary

For a Rome anniversary that wants the city's best rooftop view paired with proper Dorchester service, the Eden is unmatched in the market. La Terrazza handles tasting-menu anniversary dinners with discretion; the concierge has Vatican and Borghese private-tour access that no contemporary competitor matches.

Proposal

The terrace at La Terrazza at sunset facing the dome of St Peter's is one of the four or five strongest proposal rooms in central Europe. The hotel handles the staging quietly — a corner table on the terrace, a chilled bottle, the sky to the west. The rest is on you.
