The Akelarre hotel opened on 1 August 2017 — adjoining Pedro Subijana's eponymous three-Michelin-star restaurant, which has operated on the western flank of Monte Igueldo since 1970 and held three Michelin stars continuously since 2007. The architectural commission was Madrid practice Mecanismo Arquitectos with interior architecture by Tarruella Trenchs Studio of Barcelona; the brief was 22 detached rooms in a low-rise contemporary building cut into the cliff-face below the existing restaurant building, with the architectural principle that no room should be visible from the restaurant building above and that every room should have a direct cliff-edge view of the Bay of Biscay 100 metres below.
