The Hotel

Hotel María Cristina opened on 8 August 1912 — inaugurated by Queen Regent María Cristina (the mother of King Alfonso XIII) for whom the hotel was named, in the presence of the Spanish royal family who had summered in San Sebastián since the 1880s and made the city Spain's principal Belle-Époque royal-summer destination. The architectural commission was Charles Mewès of Paris — the architect of the original 1898 Paris Ritz and the Carlton Hotel London (1907) — whose Belle-Époque-grand-hotel vocabulary defined the property's interior register: marble lobby with double-staircase, painted-ceiling ballroom, French-style salons, and a Cuban-mahogany double-cage elevator that has operated continuously since 1912 and remains in service today. The María Cristina was the principal Spanish royal summer hotel through the 1910s-1930s; through the Civil War it served briefly as a military hospital before resuming as a hotel in 1939. The property has been the official hotel of the San Sebastián International Film Festival continuously since the festival's founding in 1953 — the September festival week is the property's most-booked period of the year, with the hotel hosting Hollywood stars (Bette Davis, Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn, more recently Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas) on the Mewès central staircase nightly.

The 136 rooms — including 26 suites — are arranged across the building's six floors with the original 1912 Mewès plan preserved. Standard categories at 28 sqm; the named Personality Suites (Hemingway, Stravinsky, Bette Davis, María Cristina among them — named for guests who stayed in those specific rooms) at 60 sqm are the milestone units; the María Cristina Suite at 165 sqm is the headline category, with the original 1912 frescoed ceiling and a private balcony overlooking Paseo República Argentina. Bathrooms are travertine; bath products are Penhaligon's, Marriott Luxury Collection's signature.

Restaurante Café Saigon — the named all-day-and-evening restaurant — runs an Asian-Basque crossover register from chef Néstor Luis Marrero. The Easo Bar at the lobby corner runs the cocktail-and-aperitivo programme; Dry Martini Bar — the property's signature cocktail destination — operates in the original 1912 American Bar (the first dedicated American-style hotel bar in Spain). The Salón Real (the original 1912 ballroom with the Mewès painted ceiling intact) handles afternoon tea daily 4-6 PM. There is no spa or pool; the fitness centre operates on the lower-ground level. The property's amenity restraint reflects the heritage-grand-hotel architectural vocabulary — the building is classified Bien de Interés Cultural and the original 1912 Mewès interiors cannot be replaced with contemporary spa-and-pool extensions.

The Paseo República Argentina position is the booking proposition. From the front door it is two minutes on foot across the Puente Santa Catalina to the Old Town (Parte Vieja) and the principal pintxos-bar axis, four minutes to the Kursaal Convention Centre (the principal Film Festival venue), six minutes to La Concha beach and the central Paseo de la Concha promenade, and 12 minutes by car to San Sebastián Airport (EAS). For travellers wanting the most architecturally significant hotel address in the Basque Country and the Belle-Époque-and-Film-Festival heritage, María Cristina is unambiguous. Hotel de Londres is the Concha-front alternative; María Cristina is the river-and-Old Town answer.
