Hotel Cala di Volpe opened in 1963 on Cala di Volpe bay as the original luxury hotel of Prince Karim Aga Khan IV's Costa Smeralda development — the project that effectively invented Sardinian luxury tourism by transforming the previously-undeveloped Costa Smeralda coastline into the most internationally-recognised Mediterranean luxury destination of the 1960s and 1970s.
