The Hotel

North Island opened on 15 January 2003 as the personal Indian-Ocean private-island project of South African conservationist Wilderness Safaris (the Botswana-based luxury-safari operator) — built on a 200-hectare granite-rock island in the Inner Granitic Seychelles, 30 kilometres north of Mahé and accessed only by helicopter or by the property's private boat. The architectural commission was Cape Town's Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens; the building brief was 11 detached single-storey villas distributed across the island so that no villa is visible from any other, with traditional Seychellois materials (driftwood, granite, palm-thatch, hand-poured concrete) and a deliberate Robinson-Crusoe-meets-Aman design vocabulary. The property entered the Marriott Luxury Collection in 2018 (acquired by Marriott as part of the Starwood-merger expansion of the Luxury Collection) and remains the only Forbes Five-Star property in the entire Indian Ocean — having held the designation continuously since 2014.

The 11 villas divide into three categories. Standard "Beach Villas" at 450 sqm (yes — 450 square metres each, the largest standard category in any hotel in the world) include private outdoor pavilion, private 12-metre lap pool, private outdoor sala-pavilion, and direct beach access. The North Island Villa is the milestone unit at 750 sqm. The Royal Villa — the original two-bedroom villa where the British Royal couple honeymooned — is the historic-interest category. Bathrooms are open-air with travertine; bath products are local Seychellois Madame Zo botanicals. The all-inclusive structure includes all meals, all wine, all beverages, all spa treatments, all watersports, and helicopter transfer from Mahé.

The dining programme is the principal operational layer of the all-inclusive structure. There is no fixed restaurant — meals are served wherever the guests wish on the island, with the daily-changing menu determined per-villa by the head chef and prepared individually for each villa. Private dinners on the beach, in the villa's outdoor pavilion, on the helicopter pad at sunset, or aboard the property's traditional Seychellois schooner moored offshore are all standard. The 8,000-bottle wine cellar holds South African verticals (Vergelegen, Klein Constantia, Meerlust) plus French and Italian. The Spa runs three treatment rooms with the only Aman-trained therapist team in the Indian Ocean. The watersports programme includes private-charter snorkelling on the island's three beaches, fly-fishing on the surrounding reef, and the property's traditional schooner for full-day Indian Ocean cruising. The North Island Conservation programme — a Wilderness Safaris-led environmental project that has restored the indigenous Seychelles bird and tortoise populations on the island over twenty years — is the property's signature cultural programme, with twice-daily guided naturalist walks.

The Inner Granitic Seychelles position is the booking proposition. From Seychelles International Airport (SEZ) on Mahé it is a 25-minute helicopter transfer (included in the all-inclusive rate); the alternative is a 45-minute private-boat transfer from Beau Vallon on Mahé. Mahé is 30 kilometres south; Praslin is 50 kilometres east-north-east. The island is private to the resort — there are no other hotels, no other guests, no day-trippers, and no resident population other than the property staff and the conservation team. For travellers wanting the most-private, most-exclusive, most-Royal Indian Ocean booking, North Island is unambiguous.
