The Hotel

The Lodge at Vail opened in 1962 — the same year Vail Mountain itself opened, on December 15, 1962 — and was Vail's first hotel and the original cornerstone of Vail Village. The property was developed by Vail Associates (the founding owner-operator of Vail Mountain, predecessor to Vail Resorts) as the new resort's flagship lodging address; the architecture by Fitzhugh Scott took an alpine-chalet idiom and adapted it for the Gore Creek site, establishing the Bavarian-inspired Vail Village vernacular that has informed every subsequent village building. The Lodge has been renovated and expanded multiple times across six decades and joined the RockResorts brand programme under Vail Resorts in the 2000s; today it operates as the village's heritage flagship, the only hotel that can claim continuous operation since the resort's opening day.

The 165 rooms span Lodge Rooms (the entry inventory in the heritage building), Junior Suites, and the 46 one-, two-, and three-bedroom Suites that occupy the property's signature inventory. The Suites — the headline category and the principal commercial argument — feature wood-burning fireplaces (most contemporary American mountain hotels run gas), private walk-out balconies, and finishes of mahogany and marble. The named Suites (the Bridge, the Founders, the Gold) handle milestone-anniversary bookings and longer family weeks; the One-Bedroom Lodge Suites with Gore Creek aspect are the entry honeymoon category. Across renovations the Lodge has preserved the European-chalet envelope intact while updating bathroom finishes and beds.

Dining centres on the Wildflower — the property's contemporary American restaurant in a refurbished dining room with creek-side aspect — and the Lodge Bar, the lobby venue with one of Vail's longest-running après-ski programmes. The seasonal Cucina Rustica (Italian) and the al-fresco Mickey's Bar (the lobby pour with terrace) handle the rest of the dining brief.
