"The Zurich five-star where the airport feels three time zones away. A 95-room hotel cantilevered into the Uetliberg's eastern flank — Caminada's Igniv at dinner, and an outdoor pool that ends, abruptly, at the forest."

The Hotel

The original Hotel Atlantis opened in 1970 — a brutalist-modernist Justus Dahinden landmark cantilevered into the eastern slope of the Uetliberg above Zurich's Wollishofen district at Doltschiweg 234. The original property closed in 2009 and the building was acquired by the Swiss Giardino Hotel Group, the operator behind the Giardino Ascona and Giardino Mountain in St. Moritz. Architects Stücheli and Stafa Steiner led a near-complete reconstruction over 2010–15: the slab-cantilever silhouette and the relationship with the forested hillside were preserved; everything inside was new. The hotel reopened on 6 March 2015 as Atlantis by Giardino, and held LHW (The Leading Hotels of the World) accreditation by 2016.

The 95 rooms (including 23 suites) are arranged across the cantilevered concrete-and-glass building, with the south- and east-facing categories looking down through the forest canopy toward Zurich. The Forest View category at 36 square metres is the standard booking; the City View at 42 square metres adds the lake-of-Zurich glimpse on clear days; the named suites (the Penthouse, the Atlantis Suite, the Family Suites) range from 70 to 200 square metres. Rooms are warm-toned (oak, leather, ochre) — a deliberate counterpoint to the building's brutalist envelope — with floor-to-ceiling glass on the slope side. Every room received a refresh in 2022. The address is technically Zurich (postal code 8055) but the experience is forest-resort: 12 minutes to Zurich Hauptbahnhof by car, or a 10-minute walk to the Uetlibergbahn S10 station for the train into town.

Igniv by Andreas Caminada is the property's headline restaurant — Caminada's three-Michelin-star Schloss Schauenstein in Fürstenau anchors the chef's group, and Igniv (the Romansh word for "nest") is the brand's shared-plate fine-dining concept. The Zurich Igniv has held one Michelin star and 17 Gault Millau points consistently. Ecco St. Moritz alumna Silvio Germann ran the kitchen for the opening run; the current chef de cuisine is part of the Caminada group's rotation. The Restaurant by Atlantis is the all-day with terrace; Hide & Seek is the bar. Dipiu Spa runs to 2,500 square metres — sauna, steam, ice fountain, treatment rooms, an indoor and outdoor pool — and is the most considered hotel spa within the Zurich city limits.

The position is the proposition. The forest, the Uetliberg trails (the 8 km Planetenweg trail starts at the Uetliberg summit a 25-minute ride above the hotel), the elevation difference from the lake (200 metres above Lake Zurich), and the visual quiet of the slope are the reasons to book here over Baur au Lac or Park Hyatt. For travellers extending a Zurich business or banking trip into a weekend — for honeymoons that want the city for shopping but a hideout for sleeping — for solo wellness retreats — Atlantis by Giardino is the answer. The trade-off is the city-centre distance (12 minutes by car versus a one-minute walk for Baur au Lac) and the absence of a lakefront. The forest is the substitute, and it is a strong one.

Best Occasion Fit

Wellness Retreat

The 2,500-square-metre Dipiu Spa, the indoor-outdoor pool, the forest-edge sauna terraces, and the Uetliberg hiking corridor at the door make Atlantis the most considered Zurich-city wellness booking. Book a Forest View Suite, a 3-day Dipiu programme, and dinner at Igniv on alternating evenings.

Honeymoon

A Zurich honeymoon split between city days and forest evenings. The Atlantis Suite with private terrace looking into the canopy is the headline booking; Igniv at dinner; couple's treatments in the Dipiu followed by the outdoor pool at dusk. The 12-minute drive to Bahnhofstrasse is a feature, not a bug.

Solo Retreat

A 95-room hotel with a forest at the door, a serious spa, and a Michelin-starred dining room is an excellent solo booking. The Forest View King Room is the standard answer; book three to four nights, the spa programme on day two, the Uetliberg ridge walk on day three, and Igniv tasting menu at the bar counter on the last evening.
