The Hotel

The Foundry Hotel Asheville opened in 2018 in three connected former-steel-foundry buildings on The Block — the historic Black neighbourhood at the southern edge of downtown Asheville, where the Asheville Steel Foundry forged the structural steel for the Biltmore House and the Grove Park Inn during the early twentieth century. The property occupies 51 South Market Street and Eagle Street and is the principal hospitality investment in the ongoing Block historic restoration programme — a deliberate, place-rooted project that has positioned The Foundry as Asheville's most consequential preservation hotel and the property where the city's African-American business and cultural history is most intentionally programmed into the guest experience.

The 87 keys are split across three historic foundry buildings (the Bridge Building, the Castanea Building, and the Heath Building — each with original brick exteriors, exposed steel beams, and rolled-edge industrial fittings preserved through the 2018 conversion) and two newer infill structures that round out the campus. Categories run from standard King and Double Queen rooms (the largest inventory category) through King with Bunk family rooms, Junior Suites, and the named One-Bedroom Suites in the converted foundry crane-bay spaces. Every room has marble bathrooms with waterfall showers, wet bars with mini-refrigerators, Nespresso coffee, and high-quality work-from-room desk arrangements. The named Crane Bay Suites are the milestone-anniversary inventory.

Benne on Eagle is the dining anchor — Chef John Fleer's kitchen on Eagle Street running a contemporary Black-Southern menu that explicitly references the foodways of The Block's historic Black community and has been semifinalist for James Beard Best Chef Southeast across multiple years. Workshop Lounge is the bourbon-and-cocktail bar — a respected programme on Asheville's broader bourbon-tourism map. The Forge — the small breakfast and pre-dinner café — handles the all-day in-house pour. There is no spa or pool; the property is positioned as a downtown-walkable boutique with the city's full restaurant and gallery radius at the door, not a resort. Pack Square, the Grove Arcade, and the South Slope brewing district are within five minutes' walk.

The position is the second commercial pillar. 51 South Market Street sits at the heart of The Block, two minutes' walk from Pack Square (downtown's principal civic square), four from the Grove Arcade (the 1929 covered market and Asheville's principal downtown shopping anchor), and eight to ten minutes from the South Slope (Asheville's brewing district, with Wicked Weed, Hi-Wire, Burial, Catawba, Green Man, and a dozen others within a fifteen-minute walk). The Foundry is the city's most place-rooted boutique and the only Asheville hotel where the building's history is itself the central guest-experience proposition. For honeymoons, anniversaries, and solo retreats prioritising downtown-walkability, design, and dining over resort amenity, this is the answer.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

For Asheville honeymoons at the downtown-boutique tier, The Foundry's Junior Suites and the converted Crane Bay One-Bedroom Suites are the room category. Marble bathrooms with waterfall showers, exposed brick and steel-beam interiors, downtown Asheville at the lobby door. Benne on Eagle handles the dinner; Workshop Lounge handles the post-dinner; the Asheville Art Museum and the Diana Wortham Theatre are within five minutes' walk for the cultural programme.

Anniversary

Anniversaries here run on the same vocabulary as the honeymoon brief, calibrated to the milestone. The Crane Bay Suites in the converted foundry buildings for headline years; Benne on Eagle's tasting-menu programme for the milestone dinner; the Workshop Lounge bourbon flights for the post-dinner. The hotel's small footprint (87 keys) gives anniversary stays a privacy and place-rooted atmosphere the corporate-five-star competition does not match.

Solo Retreat

The Foundry is a particularly good Asheville solo-retreat property. Standard King rooms at the entry rates handle the budget; Benne on Eagle and Workshop Lounge handle solo dining and drinking comfortably (both kitchens are generous to single seatings); the city's full coffee shop and brewing-district radius is at the lobby door; the Asheville Art Museum and the Black Mountain Center for the Arts are walkable. The Block's place-rooted programming gives solo travellers a richer cultural framing than the corporate-hotel competition.
