The Hotel

Treebones Resort sits at 71895 Highway 1 in South Big Sur, near the small community of Gorda — about 65 miles south of Carmel and 90 minutes north of Cambria. The property occupies a coastal hillside facing the Pacific with the open expanse of the Santa Lucia Mountains behind. Treebones was conceived in 2002 by John and Corinne Handy as a glamping resort that took the format seriously: yurts with proper bedding and bathrooms, a real restaurant, and architectural ambition that the camping-resort category often ignores. The property has expanded steadily over two decades — today it runs as a destination property with multiple accommodation typologies and a strong food programme.

There are about 16 ocean-view yurts (the property's flagship inventory), a smaller set of partial-ocean-view yurts, an autonomous-tent setup that runs entirely off-grid, and the much-discussed 3D-printed tiny home — a one-bedroom prototype built in 2018 demonstrating new construction methods, available for booking like any other accommodation. The Yurts run with king-size beds, plush bedding and linens, a small table-and-chair set, sink vanity with hot and cold running water, redwood view decks with Adirondack chairs, and reading lights — the structure is canvas-on-wood-frame; the bathrooms are shared central facilities (private bathrooms are a recent additional category). The Human Nest — a hand-built nest you climb into to sleep, ocean-view — is the property's most-photographed cult booking.

The Lodge handles the dining programme. Two distinct experiences run nightly: a seasonal four-course prix fixe dinner with seasonal Californian sourcing, and the Sushi Bar — an intimate omakase programme with the chef serving 14-16 courses through the evening, panoramic ocean view, capacity around eight per seating. The Sushi Bar is the property's signature and books months ahead. Breakfast is served daily and included with most rates. The lower property includes a heated pool overlooking the Pacific (not always available depending on season), a hot tub, and the small kitchen-garden plot. The cliff-edge walking trails give immediate access to the South Big Sur coast.

The Treebones location in South Big Sur is the property's distinctive positioning — most Big Sur visitors stop at Post Ranch and Ventana in the central stretch and never reach the southern coast. Treebones requires a 2-hour drive from Monterey or 90 minutes from Cambria. The trade-off is dramatic: less Highway 1 traffic, more genuinely wild coastline, fewer fellow travellers. For couples on adventurous honeymoons, anniversaries, and solo travellers who want the cliff coast without the cliff-edge five-star, Treebones is the most considered answer in South Big Sur.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

An adventurous Big Sur honeymoon that puts the experience above the spa. Book a Full Ocean View Yurt. Two nights with the omakase Sushi Bar reservation, sunset hot tub, and the morning cliff walk fill the right rhythm. The 3D-printed tiny home is the curious-couple alternative.

Solo Retreat

The yurt format, the intentional South Big Sur isolation, and the Lodge's communal-table dinners make Treebones an unusually good solo destination. Book a Partial Ocean View Yurt for value or a Full Ocean View for the peak experience.

Anniversary

A nontraditional anniversary that swaps spa-and-suite for cliff-and-yurt. The Sushi Bar handles the milestone dinner; the property location handles the rest. Book the autonomous tent for an off-grid milestone, or the 3D-printed home for the curious version.
