"Elyton is the downtown Birmingham play. The 1913 Empire Building gives the rooms a ceiling height that no new build can fake, Moon Shine is the rooftop the city was missing, and the location next to the BJCC and the Civil Rights District books itself."

The Hotel

The Elyton occupies the Empire Building, a sixteen-storey Daniel Burnham-influenced commercial tower built in 1913 at the corner of 1st Avenue North and 20th Street in downtown Birmingham. Originally the city's first true skyscraper and long home to law firms and insurance offices, the building was acquired in 2014 and reopened in 2017 as a 117-key boutique hotel after a comprehensive restoration. The exterior, white-glazed terra-cotta with deep cornicing and arched windows, was restored to its original condition; the lobby was opened up to expose the original cast-iron columns, marble floors, and a curated collection of Alabama artists' work. The hotel takes its name from Elyton, the original 1820 town site that preceded Birmingham's 1871 founding.

The 117 rooms (111 guest rooms and six suites) run across fifteen floors and are the property's clearest selling point. Ceilings reach twelve feet in most categories, windows are loft-scale (often six feet tall), and the post-restoration interior reads as urban contemporary with industrial bones, oak floors, blackened steel, polished concrete bathrooms, and a colour palette of cream, charcoal, and oxidised copper. Standard categories run from 360 square feet up to 720 square feet for the Junior Suites; the corner Empire Suite is the property's flagship at 1,100 square feet with a separate living room, a wet bar, and corner-facing 270-degree city views. Every room includes a complimentary iPad, Frette bedding, and a Nespresso machine.

The food and beverage program is anchored by two distinct rooms. Moon Shine is the rooftop bar on the 16th floor, opened in 2018, with a wraparound terrace and the only true 360-degree downtown view in Birmingham; the cocktail programme is among the best in Alabama and the small-plates menu runs through midnight. The Yard, the lobby-level all-day room, handles breakfast through dinner with a New Southern menu and a strong local craft-beer list. The hotel also operates a small ground-floor coffee bar that doubles as the early-morning meeting room for downtown business travelers.

The hotel's location is its operational signature. The Elyton sits one block from the BJCC convention complex, two blocks from Regions Field, four blocks from the Civil Rights Institute and the 16th Street Baptist Church, and ten minutes on foot from the Lyric Theatre and the historic Alabama Theatre. The hotel runs a small business floor with two meeting rooms, a 24-hour fitness centre, and a concierge programme that is the most reliable in the downtown market. Service is polished and well-trained, the staff-to-room ratio is roughly one to one, and the hotel's Autograph Collection affiliation gives Marriott Bonvoy elites the recognition programme without sacrificing the boutique scale.

Best Occasion Fit

Business

For a downtown Birmingham business trip, particularly to the BJCC, Regions Field, or any of the Civil Rights District-adjacent firms, the Elyton is the canonical booking. The location is one block from the convention complex; the 24-hour fitness centre runs morning programming; Moon Shine on the 16th floor is the best client-entertainment room in the city; and the Yard handles working breakfast meetings with a quiet corner and good coffee. The Autograph Collection affiliation makes the property the practical default for Marriott Bonvoy business travelers.

Anniversary

For an anniversary that wants a downtown urban shape rather than a suburban resort, the Elyton works on its own terms. Book the Empire Suite for the corner views, take cocktails on the Moon Shine rooftop at sunset, and use the property as the base for a long weekend exploring the Civil Rights District, the restaurant programme on Morris Avenue, and the Saturday Pepper Place farmers market. The 1913 architecture gives the trip a sense of place that a contemporary build cannot manufacture.
