The Hotel

Hotel 43 occupies a purpose-built corner site on Grove Street between 9th and 10th, an eight-storey building that opened in the mid-2000s and was acquired by the Red Lion Hotels Corporation's boutique division before reverting to independent operation under Sage Hospitality. The name is a quietly clever marker (Idaho joined the union as the 43rd state in 1890) and the property leans into that civic identity in its colour palette of buffalo plaid wool, blackened steel, and oak. The arrival sequence runs through a small lobby with a stone hearth into Chandlers Steakhouse, the property's tenant restaurant and one of the genuinely consistent fine-dining rooms in the Mountain West.

The 112 rooms run kings and double-queens at 320 to 380 square feet, a handful of one-bedroom suites at 600 to 800 square feet, and the Penthouse Suite on the eighth floor with a wraparound terrace and the property's strongest Capitol Boulevard line of sight. Bedding is mid-tier Sealy with a heavier-than-usual duvet, the bathrooms are stone-tiled with a separate tub and shower in the upper categories, and the window product is the unusual element: floor-to-ceiling glass on the corner units, with the Capitol dome lit at night for the north-facing rooms above the fifth floor. Hotel 43 is the one Boise property where it is worth specifically requesting the corner.

Chandlers Steakhouse is the property's defining amenity and the reason a number of repeat business travellers book the property by name. The room is an unironic American steakhouse, walnut bar, leather banquettes, white tablecloths, with a serious Pacific Northwest wine list, a competent caviar service, and live jazz five nights a week. The bar is consistently identified by the local press as the best in downtown Boise, the cocktail program runs above the city's average, and the late-night menu means in-room dining can deliver a properly composed dinner past 10:00 PM. The hotel's continental breakfast spread runs in the small lobby room off the lobby for guests who prefer a quick start.

Amenities are pitched for the business traveller. The fitness centre is small but properly equipped with a row of cardio, free weights to 50 pounds, and a stretching mat; the property does not run a spa or pool. Two meeting rooms handle groups to 30. Complimentary valet (rare in Boise at this price), a complimentary downtown shuttle, and a complimentary airport shuttle from the Boise International Airport four miles south are all included. Service across the property is the friendly, slightly-less-buttoned-up note of the Boise hospitality stock, on first-name terms by the second morning. Hotel 43 reads as a half-step less polished than the Inn at 500 Capitol or the Grove but trades that for the steakhouse and the Capitol-end location.

Best Occasion Fit

Business

For business travel that includes a client dinner, the booking calculus is straightforward: Hotel 43 puts Chandlers directly downstairs, the city's most reliable steakhouse and the room where Boise actually does deals. Walk to the Capitol in four blocks, to Boise Centre in five, and to Idaho Central Arena in three. The complimentary valet and the complimentary airport shuttle reduce expense-report friction. Ask for a corner king on the seventh floor.

Anniversary

An anniversary weekend at Hotel 43 leans on the steakhouse downstairs and the eighth-floor Penthouse Suite. The dinner is the centrepiece (book the chef's counter at Chandlers for the marquee evening) and the property handles the wider weekend: a Saturday at the Boise Art Museum and the Capitol grounds, a Sunday brunch at the Capital City Public Market two blocks east. Sage, restrained, not theatrical.

Bachelor / Bachelorette

For a small bachelor or bachelorette weekend, Hotel 43 is the friendliest Boise booking: corner kings absorb late check-ins quietly, the bar at Chandlers is the city's better cocktail room, and the 8th Street nightlife corridor is two blocks north for the post-dinner walk. Idaho Central Arena hosts the Steelheads hockey weekends, the 8th Street block is the natural after-party route, and the front-desk team handles late-night returns with no friction.
