The Hotel

Palais Gallien Hôtel Bordeaux opened on 1 June 2018 in two combined 19th-century Bordeaux Haussmannian townhouses on Rue Abbé de l'Épée — directly opposite the surviving fragments of the 3rd-century Roman Palais Gallien amphitheatre, the city's principal Roman-period monument and the only Roman ruin of significant scale in Bordeaux. The architectural commission for the restoration was Bordeaux practice 2/3/4 with interior architecture by the Wilmotte & Associés Paris office (Jean-Michel Wilmotte's studio); the brief was a contemporary boutique five-star that integrates the two heritage townhouses into a single 30-room operation while adding the spa-and-pool wellness layer that none of the heritage Bordeaux competitors could provide. The hotel is Atout France-classified at four stars (the Palais Gallien is part of the Le Bouillot Collection of independent French boutique hotels) but operates at a five-star service tier.

The 30 rooms — including 6 suites — are arranged across the two combined 19th-c buildings' four floors. Standard categories at 22 sqm; the Junior Suites at 38 sqm add a sitting area; the Palais Gallien Suite at 65 sqm is the milestone unit, with the original 1880s parquet preserved and a private balcony directly overlooking the Roman ruins. Bathrooms are travertine and brass; bath products are Sothys.

There is no on-site restaurant — the property directs guests to the recommended kitchens within ten minutes' walk. Breakfast is served on the central courtyard or in the lower-ground breakfast room; the small Bar handles the cocktail-and-aperitivo programme. The Spa Sothys — the property's signature wellness component, opened with the 2018 reopening as the first Sothys-branded spa in Bordeaux — runs five treatment rooms with the Sothys plant-extract programme. The 25-metre indoor heated pool is the property's principal architectural advantage relative to other central Bordeaux boutiques — none of the central heritage hotels (InterContinental Bordeaux excepted) have an indoor pool of this size. The fitness centre is on the lower-ground level.

The Rue Abbé de l'Épée position is the booking trade-off relative to the central Place de la Comédie axis. From the front door it is six minutes by car or 12 minutes on foot to Place de la Comédie, four minutes to the Roman ruins (literally across the street), and 18 minutes by car to Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport. For travellers wanting the central Bordeaux boutique with the wellness-and-pool component over the heritage-grand alternatives, Palais Gallien is the right answer. Yndo is the design-and-art alternative; Palais Gallien is the spa-and-pool alternative.
