The Hotel

The Newbury Boston occupies the landmark building at 1 Newbury Street that operated as the Ritz-Carlton Boston from 1927 until 2007 — one of the most storied hotel addresses in New England, where John F. Kennedy held his wedding reception, where Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn stayed, and where the Boston establishment has conducted its social rituals for nearly a century. The 2021 reopening as The Newbury under new ownership and an independent banner represented one of the more considered hotel repositionings in recent American hospitality: the building's bones were preserved, the service standard elevated, and the interiors updated without erasing what made the address significant.

The 286 rooms are arranged across the building's nine floors, with the corner rooms facing the intersection of Arlington Street and Newbury Street commanding views of the Public Garden to the south and the Back Bay streetscape in every other direction. The design uses the building's original proportions — high ceilings, generous room sizes, windows that predate the era of floor-to-ceiling glass but feel correct for a building from 1927 — and layers contemporary furnishings against them with the confidence that comes from actually understanding what the building is.

Contessa, the rooftop Italian restaurant, is one of the best recent restaurant openings in Boston — handmade pasta, an excellent Negroni, and a view of Back Bay from the ninth floor that makes dinner an event in itself. The Contessa Terrace on warmer evenings is the best outdoor dining seat in the city. The ground-floor Veranda, serving breakfast and all-day service with views over the Public Garden, operates with the unhurried precision of a restaurant that knows the address does most of the selling.

Newbury Street runs east from the hotel to the Public Garden and west to Mass Ave, lined with galleries, restaurants, and the kind of boutique shopping that gives the neighbourhood its Back Bay character. The MBTA Green Line stop at Arlington is directly outside. The Public Garden and Boston Common are a two-minute walk. The hotel's location is genuinely exceptional: the corner of Newbury and Arlington is one of the most historically significant and practically useful hotel positions in the city.

Best for Anniversary

The Newbury anniversary experience is built around Contessa's rooftop — a dinner reservation with the Back Bay below, followed by a corner suite with the Public Garden at the window. The building's history adds a dimension that newer hotels cannot manufacture: staying at the address where Boston's most significant social events have occurred for a century is not insignificant. The anniversary packages include room upgrades and Contessa reservations that the concierge team will arrange.

Best for Business

For clients arriving from New York or London who expect to understand immediately where they stand in Boston, The Newbury communicates the right information. Contessa is the right venue for a dinner that should feel like an occasion rather than a meeting. The hotel's brand independence — not a Marriott, not a Hilton — reads as a choice rather than a default, which matters when you're trying to communicate that your Boston presence is considered rather than conventional.
