The Hotel

Château de Sacy occupies a restored 19th-century château in the small Premier Cru Champagne village of Sacy — a community of 700 inhabitants on the Montagne de Reims, surrounded by working Premier Cru Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier vineyards belonging to Champagne grower-Champagne producers including Henri Goutorbe, Jacques Selosse and Pierre Péters. The château was built in 1850 by the Sacy notary family and stood as a private residence through the 19th and 20th centuries before its acquisition by the Boutillier family in 2015 and comprehensive restoration to a 12-room boutique hotel that opened on 15 June 2017. The architectural restoration preserved the original 1850 limestone facade, the marble central staircase, and the original park; the contemporary interior register is deliberately modern at odds with the heritage architecture.

The 12 rooms — including 3 named suites — are arranged across the building's three floors. Standard categories at 25 sqm; the named Suites (Premier Cru, Verzenay, Verzy) at 40-55 sqm are the milestone units. The Premier Cru Suite at 55 sqm in the original noble bedroom on the second floor is the headline category, with the original 1850 stuccoed ceiling and a private balcony directly overlooking the working Verzy Premier Cru vineyards. Bathrooms are travertine; bath products are Cinq Mondes.

Le Pavillon is the named restaurant — a contemporary French register opened with the 2017 reopening, with a small but ambitious tasting-menu programme. The 600-bottle wine cellar specialises in Sacy and Verzy grower-Champagne producers — the most authentically-local Champagne cellar of any region hotel. Le Café Sacy handles the all-day brasserie programme. The Spa Cinq Mondes — opened with the 2017 reopening — runs three treatment rooms with the brand's signature wellness programmes; the heated indoor pool is small at 8 metres but year-round-operational. The fitness centre is on the lower-ground level. The hotel's principal cultural programme is the walking-and-cycling tour of the surrounding Verzy phare-de-Verzy (a working lighthouse-style observatory built atop a former Champagne vineyard), the Montagne de Reims Regional Natural Park, and the working Sacy and Verzy grower-Champagne caves.

The Sacy position — 12 kilometres south of Reims and 30 kilometres north-east of Épernay — is the booking trade-off relative to the Crayères and Royal Champagne alternatives. From the property it is 12 minutes by car to Reims and 25 minutes to Épernay; 50 minutes to Reims-Champagne TGV; 80 minutes to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport. The Verzenay and Verzy Premier Cru villages — the principal grower-Champagne destinations on the Montagne de Reims — are 5 minutes by car.
