Manoir Hovey began life in 1900 as the summer cottage of Henry Atkinson, an American railway executive who modelled the house on Mount Vernon and chose the south shore of Lake Massawippi for the way the light fell across it. The Stafford family bought the property in 1979, opened it as an inn, and have spent the four decades since pulling it quietly up the international rankings.
