"A 1900 lakeside cottage that grew, over four generations of the same family, into the only Relais and Châteaux house in the Eastern Townships. The grounds, the lake, the two kitchens, and the quiet are still the reasons to come."

The Hotel

Manoir Hovey began life in 1900 as the summer cottage of Henry Atkinson, an American railway executive who modelled the house on Mount Vernon and chose the south shore of Lake Massawippi for the way the light fell across it. The Stafford family bought the property in 1979, opened it as an inn, and have spent the four decades since pulling it quietly up the international rankings. It is the only Relais and Châteaux house in the Eastern Townships, the only property in the region to be awarded two Michelin Keys in the 2024 inaugural Quebec guide, and the operational benchmark every other rural Quebec inn measures itself against.

The 52 rooms and suites are spread across the original manor house, several lakeside cottages, and a discreet boathouse. Categories run from Classic rooms in the main house to four-poster Master Suites with private balconies, and seven cottage suites that sit closest to the water and read as the most romantic stock on the property. Every room is hand-finished in a different palette of toile, antique pine, and Quebec landscape painting, with whirlpool tubs, working fireplaces in upper categories, and wide-plank floors. The aesthetic is consciously rural and unforced. Nothing is corporate, nothing is identical, and the result is one of the warmer interiors in luxury Canadian hospitality.

The food is the second reason to come. Le Hatley is the formal dining room, holding a Michelin Key for chef Francis Wolf's nine-course tasting menu of Eastern Townships produce, with a wine cellar of 12,000 bottles that runs deep on Quebec ice wine and Loire whites. Le Tap Room is the casual sibling, with a daily-changing bistro card, a long communal table, and a Quebec craft beer list. Both restaurants book a season ahead in summer and on long weekends. Breakfast is included for hotel guests and is served on the lakeside terrace from late May through October, which is when the property is at its most photographed.

The grounds carry the rest of the offer. Manoir Hovey owns 700 metres of private Lake Massawippi shoreline, a heated outdoor pool with a sunset orientation, a clay tennis court, kayaks and canoes for guests, and a small dedicated spa with four treatment rooms run on Comfort Zone products. Service is the property's standout: the staff-to-room ratio runs close to two to one, turnover is unusually low, and the operating signature is the kind of unflustered hospitality that takes thirty years of family ownership to assemble. The hotel closes for two weeks each November but otherwise runs year-round, with skating and ice fishing on the lake in February and a fall colour week in mid-October that books out twelve months ahead.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

For a Quebec honeymoon at the most settled end of the Eastern Townships stock, Manoir Hovey is the clear booking. The cottage suites give a couple a private lakeside footprint with their own dock; Le Hatley is the most accomplished kitchen in rural Quebec; the property closes the loop with private boat hires and in-room champagne turndowns that are managed quietly rather than ceremonially. Book the boathouse for the most private cottage on the lake.

Anniversary

An anniversary at Manoir Hovey is the cleanest answer in Eastern Canada to the question of how to mark a milestone without staging a production. The full property is small enough for the staff to recognise a returning couple by day two, the wine cellar will assemble a vertical of the year you were married, and a private dinner can be arranged on the lakeside terrace, in the boathouse, or at the four-top by the Le Hatley fireplace.

Wellness Retreat

For a wellness stay at the most editorial end of the Townships, Manoir Hovey trades the gym-like vocabulary of the destination spas for something quieter: morning yoga on the lawn, two-hour mid-day swims in the lake from June through September, a four-room treatment programme, and a kitchen that will sit down with guests to plan a week of dietary preferences. Pair with the resident hiking and paddling concierge for a structured but unfussy reset.
